Watching Ray Leonard prove he was not just media hype against Roberto Duràn in Montreal was a victory of sorts in my opinion.
Though Leonard didn't win the fight, it was how he fought in a losing effort was the key.
That fight set the stage for Leonard vs Duran , in New Orleans, and much more importantly, the fight to come against the 3rd best welterweight head to head in history.

If there's a such thing as a satisfying "loss ", what Ray Leonard demonstrated in Montreal would be the poster child for it.

 

There’s always been debate about how much Duran forced Ray to fight Roberto’s fight vs the degree to which Ray voluntarily engaged in Duran’s preferred mode of fighting.

Just imo, the way Montreal unpacked was that much more about Ray’s free choice election to fight Mano a Mano than Duran’s duress.

Those who knew best about that would have been first Ray and second Roberto.

I think Duran knew he would be fighting a vastly different Leonard in the rematch with Ray duly fighting to his own strengths, not Roberto’s.

I totally agree that it was a “victory” of sorts for Leonard in Montreal and that Duran likely knew that a Leonard fighting the best he knew how would be a much tougher prospect to get over the top of.
