Certainly part of it has to do with body type. I would say about 6‘3“ and 230 pounds is good assuming that person is in shape at that weight.

6'5, 235, with enough athleticism, genetic luck of the draw and conditioning someone that size can move like Ali or Usyk and keep the stamina

I find it odd how in other sports where size, strength and fitness are all highly prized (rugby is a good example…even MMA to an extent), the most impressive “big men” are often around 260-270lbs at 6’4” - 6’6”, yet there still seems to be this belief among boxing fans (often not reflected by the actual fighters) that boxers need to be relative lightweights compared to the strong, athletic guys in other sports. I’m just not sure it’s true. Rugby loose forwards are running for 80 minutes, why do boxers needs to be scrawny to be fit?

That's a fair point. In comparisons with american football or even MMA, people could say 12 boxing rounds takes a lot of cardo, but as you've mentioned large rugby players play an even more cardio intensive sport.

Fighting cardio is different. An fairly fit guy can go all out for the entire length of a 800m race, he wont be able to do the same on the heavy bag for a whole round. And that's an example without a live opponent giving resistance.

Tall enough to have a range advantage over most opponents, while still having the frame for athleticism.

    Cardio and speed.

Big musclebound guys tend to be slower and they tend to gas out faster.

Sure, they hit really hard when they hit, but a lighter faster guy will pretty much let Hulk's body do his work for him making him swing and miss.

The harder the big guy pushes the more he will gas out. Check out Briggs vs Vitali to see this. Briggs simply doesn't have the speed to catch him clean, and his extra-muscles become a liability after a while.

If mega muscles made mega fighters, you'd better believe boxers would be getting them.

Hello, MixedMartialLaw. If Bridgerweight continues on at the 224 pounds limit, then 225 pounds plus is the modern ideal heavyweight. Some guys can carry that well at 5'10" so that would be the ideal minimum height needed.

If I can find a picture of Semmy Schilt I will post it to this thread. My ideal HW fighter is 7 foot and around 300lbs :p

Exactly... Tired old saying, but it's not the size, it's how you use it.

Or, rather, the ideal size depends on the style and other attributes will determine whether that's viable or not.

Honestly, probably like 6’10+ is the “perfect” heavyweight. Have you ever tried to box someone who isn’t as good as you but is much taller? It’s surprisingly difficult. Someone who was that tall and still had mobility and skill would be the Wemby of the Boxing world
