Pernell Whitaker vs Wilfred Benitez.@140

In what way is Pernell Whittaker weak on offense? I'm not asking this sarcastically, I don't know much about Whittaker (though I would have thought his showing against JCC at least would be indicative of strong offense).

 

Benitez had a win over Duran, was stopped by Leonard and lost a close decision to Hearns.....all in their prime. I'd say the ATG's Benitez fought were a notch above the greats Whitaker fought

That said, on their best night id probably lean towards Pernell to get the W.

 

Highly debatable. A completely partied out, over his natural weight JCC held Whitaker to a draw. Some say Julio should have gotten that decision. I will leave that for The Lord to decide.

I find Whitaker to be extremely overrated. He was a gimmick fighter at best.

Come on Seamus, Chavez didn't hold Whitaker to a draw, he was gifted a draw in one of boxings biggest robberies. How is Benitez going to stop a prime Whitaker when Trinidad could stop a completely partied out Whitaker?

 

I don't know about all that. I had that JCC-PW fight a draw. Some had it for JCC. Now, I know that's a hot button topic so let's just accept the draw as it was decided by three professional judges. Given the relative state of each fighter and their trajectories, Julio certainly deserves more credit for his effort.

Benitez would stop Whitaker early. By either a left or right hand. Or perhaps a combination of those two.

 

I’m gonna say Whitaker on points though to be fair Benitez is the more proven at that specific weight

 

Pete controlled the action and got his shots off on the inside.

I looked forward to that matchup for about 4 years. That fight should have been at 140lbs though. That extra weight helped SweetPea in being able to absorb Chavez power.
For a Welterweight fight Chavez came in at 142.

 

I lean Benitez on points

 

I may say Wilfredo at 140 if he is focused .. super competitive but Wilfredo has size and reach ..

 

With all due respect, id love to see your score card and the rounds given to each fighter.
