If Leonard moved up and beat Lalonde why not Spinks?

SRL would lose. Because Jynx is one of the best LHW H2H, that doesn't mean he is ATG LHW No.1.

Spinks wipes him out easily. Massive size differential.

 

Spinks knew how to use his advantages much better than LaLonde, and that makes a huge difference, even if 2 guys (with the physical advantages) are a similar level.

I’ll give an example, Duran beat Barkley because Barkley didn’t know how to use one of his advantages, which was length, Barkley used his strength, but it wasn’t enough as Duran was able to set up counters against him, whereas Duran lost to Hearns because Hearns knew how to use his length combined with his size, and didn’t give Duran any kind of chance to use his counters because he pressed forward from arm’s length.

LaLonde had to weight drain to a catchweight of 168, one full weight class below Light-Heavy. Not a chance Spinks would agree to such terms.

Ray wouldn't stand a chance against the Jinx.

 

The fight with LaLonde was controversial because not only was it fought for LaLonde's Light Heavyweight title but it was fought at 168 so LaLonde was pretty much forced to move down to 168 if he wanted a money fight with SRL.

There's absolutely no way that Michael Spinks would bend over backwards to those terms and if it were fought at 175 Spinks would most definitely win lopsidedly.

 

Spinks was vastly superior to LaLonde. I'd favor him over Ray at 175. Also he'd never agree to the 168 lb weight stipulation

 

Spinks is a bridge too far for Sugar: too big, too strong, too skilled.

Sugar would be slapped silly and would be lucky to survive to lose by UD.

 

A weight drained Lalonde was simply the right guy with the right belt at the right time.

For Leonard, It wasn’t the beginning of a serious foray into the LH division - and as it was at catch weight, it wasn’t even that.

Ray also got the buy one get one free deal, garnering the vacant Super MW belt as well as Donnie’s LH belt. That was the prime objective - jumping from a 3 to 5 division champ by way of just one fight and victory.

Lalonde almost spoiled the party at any rate, knocking Leonard down and connecting with several hurtful shots otherwise. It wasn’t all smooth sailing.

Not to take anything away from Ray but the weight drain clearly told on Lalonde as the fight progressed.

Spinks wouldn’t have accomodated a catch weight fight - and I also don’t think Ray would’ve been inclined to take him on at 168 lbs or 175 lbs.

I’d take Spinks at either weight with Ray not lasting the distance in either scenario.

At 168 lbs Spinks’ job would, of course, be that bit harder but not enough to see him lose nor prevent him from stopping Ray imo.

 

There are levels to this thing. With Michael, Ray w would find that out real quick.

 

On no planet is Lalonde remotely comparable to Spinks.

If i can step up and outrace the fastest guy on my street why not Usain Bolt?
