How popular and mainstream Paulie Malinaggi could have become

I disagree with this analysis. You don't make it to the levels that Paulie did with a lack of skills, especially with the pillows that Paulie threw.

I liked watching him fight.

 

Typical slick fighter with no power.

I was surprised at how easy Hatton had it with him.

 

I am not saying that he was a terrible boxer, he was skilled, but not enough to reach the very top. And his punches were underrated, he was still able to hurt someone like Juan Diaz, and even stopped that Ukrainian fellow for the WBA 147 belt.
Paulie was not a worse puncher than Mayweather at 147, yet Mayweather did not need to rely on his power.

 

I once saw a highlight reel for Malignaggi that was like 3 minutes long and the first minute and a half was him jiggling around during ring intros. I've got to agree with everyone putting the focus on his lack of power above all else. I just don't think you can underestimate how unlikely serious popularity is when you have as little power as Malignaggi has to put a guy down, if not away. He was never going to be very much more popular. Broner at the lower weights never had the legs of Paulie but he always had significantly more power. It's a hurting business. All those guys can smash a jaw, even if they're not true punchers. Malignaggi had some smooth moves, and he was a credible technician but he wasn't even that well-liked back when he was in his prime and people were begrudgingly giving him props for being a tough SOB with skills (Cotto era). They still didn't really like his personality. I never really liked the dude either. If you crossed Jackie Aprile Junior with a little yap yap dog, and added 20 IQ points, you'd basically have Malignaggi.

 

He wants ro fight on the tszyu undercard as a last minute replacement in a week's time.

 

He can’t rattle a birdcage. He did pretty well all things considered but never could deal with the elites.
