Floyd ducked him by jumping over 140. Floyd was perfect for Kostya Tszyu from a style perspective. Slick boxers who Tszyu could time and hurt.
Floyd had 3 fights at 140. As a matter of fact, one of his top performances was against Gatti at 140.
Mayweather is an atg but even the very best are not unbeatable. I would pick Mayweather to win but it is far from a being a certainty
Tszyu was a master at cutting off the ring & timing quicker fighters.. always thought this was a great matchup.. a fight that got away..
FMJ was probably one of the most difficult fighters to time. He didn’t fight in rhythm and he was skilled at disrupting the rhythm of his opponents. I keep reading that Kostya Tszyu had slick fighters down pat. Zab Judah and Shamba Mitchell are the only two on his resume that fit the category and neither have the ring IQ of Floyd. Although Floyd briefly found himself in trouble with different styles, he always made the adjustments to get himself out of those jams and dominate. Brawlers gave Floyd the most issues and his most controversial wins. Zu was not one and IMO, Floyd would always be a step or two steps ahead of him.
How much denial are we in to pretend that a 2004-2005 version of Tszyu beats Floyd ? That's the only time the fight could have happened and that version of Tszyu couldn't even beat Hatton.
Completely different styles with Hatton and Floyd. Hatton was rough and dirty used Tszyu's ball bag like a speed ball had the ref on his side whereas when Floyd fought Hatton Floyd had Mr Cortez on his side stopping Hatton anytime he got momentum. Even in 2005 Floyd v Kostya is a good match up and in reality neither guy washes the other it's likely a close fight whoever you pick especially with a neutral referee. Floyd fan boys always think he is a level above everyone just because he stayed undefeated.
Floyd would dominate Tszyu. Especially in 05. He was dealing with injuries and was inactive. There’s no way in hell he was beating a peak Floyd at that time.
Floyd was a dirty little stinker too though. Especially his use of elbows, as well as holding and hitting. He used both vs Hatton to out-dirty him. Tszyu is not gonna like it much himself. This was when he could still punch in hard combinations too. Gave Gatti a beating in arguably his career best performance. I don't like Tszyu's inactivity from 2002-2005 here either. He fought once a year, each year. Not good to be inactive and in your mid 30s vs Floyd at his best. Plus, Floyd would almost certainly have Cortez here. Just screams disaster for Tzyu. Everything's against him.
Yeah Floyd would never fight without the deck stacked in his favor. The Gatti win is so overrated Oscar had already given him an absolute pasting he never stood a chance against Mayweather. Gatti had a name but was a weak belt holder at 140 he was on the same level as Mickey Ward who as great as he was for the sport was not an elite fighter.
