Not a chance. You're saying an almost 37 year old Tyson was better than an almost 27 year old Wlad? That's ridiculous. Wlad was also ranked higher than Tyson at that point.

 

I think he means Tokyo Tyson was better than Wlad. 37 years old Tyson would have been massacred by Wlad.

 

Johnny Nelson and Puritty were absolutely not real contenders at heavyweight. Maybe for a minute with Puritty and maybe for the WBF with Nelson.

 

Douglas beat a single top ten contender, right? Not exactly the stuff of legends.

 

"Tokyo Douglas" requires a lot of emphasis. Buster in that fight looked like a top drawer heavyweight; he beat Tyson like a drum for the majority of the fight. Regardless of where you think Tyson was mentally and technically, you're still talking about a guy who would several years later recapture slices of the heavyweight title, and was close to his physical prime no matter what was going on upstairs.

That has to be considered a high level of fighter, even if just as a snapshot rather than a reflection of his career as a whole and flaws as a fighter.

I don't see the case for the inactive Sanders who mugged Wlad to beat that version of Douglas. Obviously a puncher's chance and Corrie was very dangerous early doors, but it's not the most likely outcome. Douglas had that movement and jab, and he could win "boring" like he showed against McCall if he needed to. As others have pointed out, Sanders didn't seem to carry his threat into the later rounds.

Hannover Sanders is so motivated that when he got his Tyson, he didn't almost get knocked out or almost go the distance. He put his Tyson out early, with no competition. Tokyo Douglas can't say that, so just not as great as Hannover Sanders, The Hannover Pretzel Killer. The Hannover Hammer. Homicide Hannover. Hellfire Hannover. The nicknames were endless. All deserved.
