Cotto vs Winky Wright

Well, I think this is an easy pick. Winky Wright would have won by unanimous decision. We already saw that Miguel struggled against a stylistically similar opponent—Joshua Clottey. Clottey, who was often lazy and a bit full of himself, fought in his usual relaxed and nonchalant style. Even so, he was an extremely awkward opponent for Cotto, and I thought he outboxed Miguel. Whatever the judges had on their scorecards doesn't really matter. Now imagine Winky Wright, a natural middleweight who was always disciplined and fully focused in the ring. Well... except for that one moment in the Shane Mosley rematch. I have no doubt Winky would have beaten Miguel.

 

Wright KO Cotto at 154, easy, too easy.

Cotto was getting wobbled by that small Ali dude at 154. Only reason Cotto beat Martinez was because Martinez had a bum knee, that's a fact.

Cotto was good when he was fighting C level fighters and smaller fighters. Against real opponents he failed.

 

My prediction for this fantasy match is what I wrote, Wright clearly on points.

I disagree that Cotto has only beaten C-level fighters and small fighters. To say this, to me, is to ignore Cotto's career, because Mosley is not a C-level fighter, and even though he was over 35 when he lost to Cotto, Shane was still very competitive, given that two years later Cotto would become world champion again, dominating Margarito and beating him by stoppage. Margarito is definitely not a C-level fighter, just like Clottey and Judah (who would also become world champion after Cotto). There, these are facts.

 

Mosley was past his prime and still got robbed on the cards. The day they fought most people felt Old Man Mosley won.

Judah was a solid fighter, never the best of the best, bot extremely talented. Judah always felt short against his biggest challenges, and even then Cotto needed to resort to fouling and dirty fighting to get the upper hand.

Cotto was a solid WW, no way he survives Winky.

Winky would put a beating on another one of Puerto Rico's favorite sons.

 

Winky in a fairly one-sided beatdown. Late stoppage or wide points.

 

I think Cotto had even more trouble when he couldn't get his offense off. Clottey, Trout, and Pacman...three different styles, and Miguel struggles when he cant get his offense off. He was in the Margarito 1 fight, just beaten d/t wraps. Its a psychological thing...I took his best shot, can he take mine...except Miguel cant ever land his shot(s).

I think initially I felt Cotto could have a small chance d/t his left hook pre Margarito (Miguel abandoned that punch afterward for unknown reasons), but comments here have made me realize how much I forgot in Winky.

 

Cotto would struggle to get past that jab, and even when he does, what’s he gonna do?

Wright is the bigger and stronger man, and had a decent defence, it was hard to land clean against him and do damage, and I don’t see a way Cotto can win enough rounds to take a decision.
