Was having a chat the other day with a good friend of mine who reckons DLH would have a bloody good chance of beating Tony M. His argument was based around Margarito looking good against Cotto because of 'styles make fights' and Cotto's tactics were poor. He reckoned that DLH would edge a points victory. I know he was half asleep at the time but surely no excuse. My argument was simple. The 36-year old DLH might do well in 6 rounds but his stamina has always been in question shall we say and surely Tony M would againt walk his man down to a late stoppage. Anyone else on here reckon DLH could do it?
Look here: somebody strange is going to beat Margarito. With his style, an iron will and a good general could do it. Experience might indeed be key. I won't pick Oscar if he fights Margarito, but I probably won't be picking the man who does beat him.
Logic says Margarito stops him on accumaltion or outworks him to a UD after about the 7th. But who knows what could happen. If Oscar rolls back the years and puts in one last great performance, if Margarito is a bit off on the night, with it being at 154 and the amount of shots Margarito has taken who knows the guy's punch resistance could drop dramatically and he could be KO'd. Anything can happen in boxing.
IF the fight ever did happen it would be interesting to see how the support went for DLH. Of course, initially, it'd be all for AM but I reckon it'd slowly build for DLH on the fight week. But I still think that a 36 year-old DLH gets stopped late on. We'll probably never know :-(
I agree, Margo is tough, but some people forget Oscar is one tough SOB, hits harder than Cotto, adjusts better, and I think could beat Margarito
Even at this point Oscar could pull out a decision at a catchweight. It's very unlikely, but I don't see Tony, or anyone at welterweight stopping him. Oscar has never been really seriously hurt to the head and he AM will have a tough time getting to Oscar's body because he doesn't languish on the ropes. DLH could take enough of the early rds to make the usually slow starting Margarito desperately try to take the later rds to pull of a decision. I would have to pick AM if they fought, but a stoppage is very unlikely considering Paul Williams and Joshua Clottey took him the distance.
Whats the deal about favorising dela Hoya? I would make AM the favorite, but i wouldnt be shocked if dela Hoya upsets Margarito. He is not shot, he has a huge trick book and may be able to outmaneuvre Margarito. His stamina is a concern, and its the best argument to make AM the favorite. Im pretty sure Hoya outboxes him early. In the second half of the fight he might have better ring smarts than Cotto. Your thread title makes it sound as if someone would give Alfonso Gomez a chance of upsetting Floyd Mayweather...
A properly trained version of Hoya could do it. The problem is he is a businessman most of the year. Your friend is right, styles do make fights. You too are right in thinking that Hoya's stamina might give way but these are some points to consider. 1) Hoya's stamina did not give way against Forbes, though yes Forbes is no Margo. Just saying his stamina is a problem whether the fight is easy or not. Full fight conditioning and looking good away from the training camp and not just in it are important. Hoya has stayed in shape since Forbes since he expected to fight Mayweather. 2) Margarito can be slowed down. Hoya will be hammering Margo harder than Cotto did and unlike Cotto Hoya has the experience to know Margo's knees need to be weakened by continous body shots. Margo's guard will be high so as not to take Hoya's left hook and Hoya can weaken him with body combos. 3.) A chin is a very nice thing to have. Margo has a good one and Hoya has a good one. But Hoya's hook will hurt anyone. 4)Hoya is faster than Margo and has better defence and much better footwork.
I always thought DLH is all wrong style wise for Margo. Margo can't just keep walking at DLH eating punches, especially at 154.
Look Margaritos track record proves and this is a FACT to beat him you must be a southpaw and recently those southpaws where BIG Southpaws, the others early in his career were not so big but they to were southpaws. Cotto could have pulled out the win after seeing the fight play out, he just didnt get off enough body work to make that happen, and that is what you need to do to break Tony down you must work the body, Oscar does not go to the body that often. and against Tony you risk getting tagged with them upper cuts going to that body. Your friend is a typical delusional De La Hoya fan, No way Pink thong beats this man
When you've fought Chavez, Whitaker, Camacho, Hernandez, Ruelas, Mosley x 2, Tito, Bhop, Vargas, Quartey, Mayorga and PBF among many others, I think that would qualify as Tough. Or is Margo now the benchmark by which all toughness is judged?
