Anyone watching the finals? Good contest at 70kg McConnell from Northern Ireland winning a split decision. Now it's heavyweight Okoh vs Williams, Wales v England!
Got it on now. I was there last weekend for the lightweights - took the mrs along because it's 10 minutes from the house! She gets bored of boxing on TV because of all the gaps, pundits and stuff but really enjoyed the pace of these contests, got properly into it. Okoh-Williams was kebab shop stuff by the end, you wouldn't think they'd gas at 3 rounds!
Real shame these games have been on terrestrial TV like usual. Boxers who do well in these games usually get some real exposure and a platform to springboard their profile in a push to turn pro, but this time they have been largely anonymous. Good luck to all involved, the UK really needs some breakthrough stars, hopefully a few emerge from these games
I guess some of them are on the olympics cycle and featuring in a couple of years, a few of them are pretty young. And it's not just TV - walking around Glasgow you'd barely know the games are on, nothing like 2014. Last time we hosted it half of Scotland seemed to descend on the city but now it's just like having a few extra tourists. Shame really but it was all last-minute!
I thought he had fast hands in the final against a tough but pretty static and predictable opponent. He doesn't look like he hits that hard for a heavy. I wish he went more to the body in the final but I don't remember him doing it. I don't know much about the lad. He came across well but certainly has lots of room for improvement.
Thought he had a style of boxing that is very suited to the amateur format and not so much the pro's, not sure how he would transition. Only 22 though, could improve.
Yes fully agree, effective style in the amateurs, especially with his speed and southpaw stance. Like you his transition to the pro game most likely won't work as well but he is still very young.
