In the 40s, 50s and 60s the top guys fought each other. Any look at those eras makes that immediately obvious.

If anything there was more ducking in the 70s like Foreman avoiding dangerous opponents in search of a title shot or Frazier not fighting any punchers besides Foreman

A prime Jerry Quarry would knock out Dubois and Joshua today

    My take on those decades.

In the 40s a lot of the big fights didn't happen because of the war.

Nobody's fault of course, except perhaps Hitler, but it happened.

The 50s was pretty solid when Marciano was at the helm, and before, but after that it becomes a bit of a mess.

The 60s was pretty solid with what they had, but having Ali in exile for the last three years doesn't help the case.

If that was the case some of the many Quarry sized guys at super middle, light heavy and cruiserweight would do just that.

No reason to think they wouldn't try if they could

Strangely enough, I agree with your post to an extent, but still think the 70s was the best decade of the dvision.

Not super middle but Kovalev would have a decent chance. Current day David Benavidez would be no slouch against Quarry.

Yeah, the 30's rather than the 40's. The 30's champions pretty all much fought each other, and Louis fought everyone.

The early 40's was good, with Louis being such an active champion, but then the war happened and when Louis returned he was far less active.

The early 50's was also good, but Patterson's reign less so. The 60's was pretty good up until Ali's exile, but there was also the case that rematches a bit hijacked the first half of the decade. Only five men had been in title fights for the first six years of the decade. One of them was McNeely.

Definitely not overrated. 70s had 4 top 10 greatest heavyweights of all time. Ali, fraizer, foreman and holmes, plus they had other very good champions and good contenders. Guys like norton, lyle, shavers, patterson, jimmy young, cooney, quarry, bugner, chuvalo, jimmy ellis etc... This era was not overrated by any realistic measurement. 70s alongside 90s are the greatest heavyweight eras in boxing history.

Ali is just one tighter. One guy missing several years isn't enough to really hurt the era as a whole.
Overall more big fights happened in the 60s than in the 70s

And plenty of big fights happened during the war years. Bivins, Mauriello, Ray etc were still fighting frequently
