Will there ever be a heavyweight like Muhammad Ali?

Usyk is simply different from Ali. How would you compare the talent of both when they grow up in a totally different boxing culture and have different Attributes. Usyk is better at some things and ali at others.

But you could prefer usyk and you could prefer ali, that's the way I see it.

I prefer ali because I think his style is way more beautiful and his career is super exciting. Usyk is the best of this era and the highlight of the eastern european style in heavy, proving it to be capable of beating any other style when done in such quality. Also at heavy we probably didn't see prime usyk at all. It doesn't matter much to me, that a fighter with the benefits of sports science 50 years later would probably beat ali head to head.

This amateur guy I will have to look up, he 'must be the greatest' ( :-D ).

 

This is often repeated, but is it true? In Ali's comeback, at the age of 28, he had one of the best performances of his career vs Jerry Quarry... And then he gave Oscar Bonavena his only stoppage loss before he faced Frazier. That doesn't look like he was "out of prime" or "lost his prime years".

He became a better, and tougher, fighter when he largely abandoned that impractical and exhausting style of dancing around the ring.

Truth is he would've probably always had his toughest fights and so forth against the fighters he struggled the most against due to stylistic differences.

 

Angelo Dundee was firmly of that opinion and expressed it and explained it many times over.

 

Dundee also said Pinklon Thomas and Berbick would beat Mike Tyson (lol), and wasn't averse to certain questionable activities and tactics. He often contradicted himself too.

Usyk could not even work out a lumbering kickboxer for 12 rounds, and you claim some 19 year old amateur boxer is more skilled than Ali and has better accuracy blah blah. Its laughable.

 

It was 39 year old out of shape Usyk and he still finished him. Ali was actually floored by 185lb cooper lol, lost to Norton. Ali and Mike tyson are as overrated as they get

 

I am a big Ali fan and I’ve always loved Angelo Dundee, but you’re absolutely right. Angie liked to talk a lot and if you could see all those quotes over the years, you would definitely see a healthy number of times when the man contradicted himself.

 

If Ali and Tyson are overrated what the hell is Usyk?

 

A peak Usyk is more skilled than Ali, I'm not judging Usyk based on a 40 yr old version shot version. Ali lost to a bum named Leon Spinks when he was shot, a legitimate L on his record, should I judge Alis whole career based on that crappy loss ?

 

When did Usyk suddenly become shot?

Break down how Usyk is more skilled than Ali.

 

How is Tyson overrated as they get? Everyone loves watching him cos of his exciting style an all the knockouts he got but how many people here or you know actually rate him the greatest heavyweight ever? Hell most people don’t even have him in the top 5 or even 10. If anything he’s underrated rather than overrated

 

Higher workrate. Uses more angles to get to your side while he's aggressive and backing up as well, Ali mainly used uses angles on the backfoot. He's a better body puncher and varies up his shot selection, his offense is more complex in a nutshell. His footwork and feints create more paths for his punches than Ali. Usyk in his prime had better defense and got hit less although he still got hit.

Ali does things better but Usyks style is more multi-faceted.

 

Usyk was 39. That’s a big excuse right there for his performance.

The other is that, um, you should look up who Rico is and what he’s accomplished in his sport. One of the best, most accomplished combat athletes on the planet, who has spent 10+ years sparring boxers. Just saying.

 

Taller and rangier are physical attributes though, they're not a measurement of talent. I don't want to be too negative about Awinongya Jr because he has some potential, but the idea that he does anything close to Ali at this stage of his career is preposterous, to be honest. I can't see how you have arrived at that. The only elite amateur he has fought so far (Turabek) danced around him a few months ago, and Jojo's feet were probably his biggest flaw in that fight; he couldn't close the distance effectively at all. Turabek's feet and counterpunching were actually the biggest difference, especially in the second half of the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Ali, at a younger age than Jojo is now, won the Olympic gold and beat Ziggy Pietrzykowski in the final with far superior footwork and counterpunching. Let's not forget, Ziggy was a brilliant amateur who knocked out the legendary Papp in the unpaids and won multiple Olympic medals himself, and had 3 European golds to his name at the time, too. Jojo is nowhere near this caliber of fighter, and he has a long way to go to even be in this conversation; the resume just isn't there.

The same applies to Shakur as well; as much as I dislike defending him. He came within a whisker of winning Olympic gold when he was younger than Awinongya Jr is now, and he'd beaten a whole host of brilliant amateurs and won a gold at the Junior Olympics beforehand. The difference is night and day. There are multiple levels between the skill levels shown and the opponents Ali/Shakur beat at 18, compared to the fighters Jojo has struggled with at the age of 19.

 

Usyk is that guy.

But because of where he's from, he's not as famous as should be. If he was American it'd be a different story.
