Does Lennox Lewis get full credit or did David tua fold under the bright lights??

Essentially there s some back n forth in this fight,

I'll start with David . He had a monster left hook like he always does. A granite chin, a nice haircut lol , but it seemed like he would be in punching range but never throwing punches. He had a hard time slipping the jab in his face too.

And then Lennox, who was getting high praise from George Foreman for keeping his hands low in line with David's face, compared to their height and reach, double L had to keep his hands low or else he would be punching downwards. Lennox was jumping around in the last few rounds, full of energy.

On a serious note, Emmanuel steward was somewhat of a fortune teller! He predicted that he could make Lennox into the very best hw possible AND also I'm saying this with respect, he also predicted that Tyson fury and Deontay Wilder would be the future of the division . May he rest in Peace Emmanuel steward.

Some other things Lennox was doing during that fight= right ear Muff blocking the left hook, punching down at David's lower face and torso. And a brutal body shot in round two. He absorbed the hook no problem too 100%. Lennox boxed well against the one dimensional fighter who wouldn't throw punches.

Big George was commentating that Lewis deserved his proper respect, that it was his night, no excuses, and to forget about a future Mike Tyson bout because like he said this was Lennox's crowning moment. He achieved the victory over David tua by putting on a boxing clinic against the hard hitting younger but shorter opponent.

I dont find the comments of Lennox Lewis being boring in Larry merchants speech, Lewis did most of the work and he was putting on most of the action.

Tua ate some big right hands and numerous jabs. This was the first hw fight I watched in full, I though I would revisit it. LL got the decision, hands down no controversy, does anybody else remember watching this fight?
    What are your thoughts?

Btw David was only 27 during this fight and his promoters said he would be back, however he never won the title and was a underachiever while Lewis was a few years past 30 and reigned for all of the next ten years give or take in the hw division.

(He said he accomplished all his goals, in particular beating Tyson, Rahman, and Holyfield. To an aside he also is a mythical pound for pound beast and a bearer of rugged garment of that of a man who beat all of his opponents avenging two knockout losses one by way of brutal fashion kayo).

Questions: what should tua have did differently against the lion? How many times would a Lennox Lewis best David tua in a let's say ten times? And also what if tua never hurt a rib cage cartilage in sparring two months prior having it then brutally hurt in round two? So many fans either expected David tua to win or were simply depressed by the outcome of the fight. Imo Lewis didn't put in a masterclass but he is p4p in upper top ten hw material in atg status and David is A great talent albeit a gross underachiever but this was Lewis's night.

It was a mistmatch of epic proportions. Tua did himself NO FAVORS after the somewhat controversial ending in the first Rahman fight.

    My 2 cents on Tua:

Tua is simply overrated its as simple as that.

Don't get me wrong he's dangerous due to the fact he can KO anyone at any point in the fight early or late.

Plus he has an iron chin.

But skills wise he is quite limited.

Rahman outboxed Tua twice and needed to hit Rahman after the bell and get a gift stoppage.

Their 2nd fight was a gift draw for Tua aswell.

    Byrd comprehensively outboxed Tua.

If Maskaev didn't have a weak chin he would've won a landslide points victory as he won pretty much all of the first 10 rounds before getting caught.

If you stand and trade with Tua he's highly dangerous but if you have a decent jab and box him at distance you really see his limitations.

I like Tua but he is a bit overrated honestly.

    Tua was a lazy trainer

and terribly overweight for this fight.

He needed to be in Tip-top shape to really have a chance against Lewis

    Sadly he blew it badly

I think this was Lewis’s best performance.

Correction: The Byrd vs Tua fight was competitive.

I agree with everything else, though.

I recall Tua had injured his ribs in sparring in the lead up to the bout. Lewis speared him to body in one of the early rounds and Tua was in quicksand from then on. Probably a fight I’ll never watch again and I remember telling friends it had the potential to be a barn burner. It was anything but. Still, a masterful performance from LL who jabbed Tua to death, but didn’t do a great deal more. He didn’t have to.

I was at the fight in Vegas, had to get something from my car and accidentally saw Tua pulling up in a big stretch limo. Looked like a big party with guys and girls hanging out the sun roofs and windows, definitely looked like booze and whatever else was part of the party. My brother and I looked at each other and literally both said ‘oh sh…’ at the same time. I don’t think Tua prepared for the fight and at the very least did not appear to be focused on fight night. He fought like he looked arriving, not ready.

After the 1st round, Tua never got close to Lewis, the distance was much more noticeable live than how it looked on tv. Tua’s feet got slower and slower the heavier he got and he was way over his best weight for this fight. Made for a pretty boring night.

Masterful performance by Lewis. Tua had absolutely nothing to offer other than dangerous one punch KO but was too slow and timid to pose any kind of threat. His limited skills was always his downfall. Even if Tua took more chances with Lewis he would most likely be eating more power shots and counters which could very likely get himself stopped by Lewis since he was a deadly puncher himself. I remember how highly people thought of Tua as if he was the second coming to Mike Tyson. Lewis made him look second rate in comparison.

Still would have wanted to have seen Mike Tyson against David Tua at the time. I think that would have been a somewhat more competitive fight for Tua compared to when he fought Lewis. Big missed opportunity.

A bit? He is ridiculously overrated.

If he was called Alan Wilson from UK, he would probably have been underrated.

    This is an excellent analyses!
Just one big mistake: Lewis did not reign for anywhere near a decade after the fight with Tua.
His last fight was just over 2 & a 1/2 years later.

This! ^ He was losing big to Fres Oquendo before catching him. Plus Tua's weight was also his enemy. Fought too heavy late in his career. Dangerous and solid, but limited.
