These should be the wake up calls that the corrupt people running boxing never hear.

Cultivating an environment where doping isn't punished or tested as it should be (Miller is just the most blatant example) and 'unjudged' excessive fouling almost never has any repercussions (lomachenko, ward vs kovalev, dubois' headbutts, warrington etc) is a way to make the marketable fighters win.

But it is all too easily forgotten, that events like this one happen on exactly this foundation.

Make the sport cleaner. And the next time our favorite fighter wins with 'street smarts' or 'towing the line' or 'dark arts' - we should not hail it in a respectful manner. It's a contribution to some of these incidents.

Btw as much as I like hrgovic as an important fighter in the mix right now - he uses rabbit punches very blatantly and seldomly gets called on them.

What I am saying is - this doesn't happen in a vacuum and it still happens regularly and our reaction should be different.

    rip

None taken. I went thru this with my mother years ago and by the end we just wanted it to be over. So I wouldn’t assume anything here either way, but it’s normal to feel that way if a person is suffering.

I was skimming the forum while on work call when seeing this and started to actually get choked up and had to shake it out and recompose myself for a second. If I wanted to feel things at work, I'd be on smut sites, Serge, gawdammit.

I know celebrity deaths can sometimes feel a bit abstract and a natural reaction is one of detached respect, however in this instance it has genuinely upset me somewhat. I guess part of it is the bravery and stoicism shown by Prichard after his horrific injury, as well the as the unflinching love, patience and loyalty his family exhibited toward him. But another big part of it is the gross negligence, incompetence and disdain of the referee in his fight against Williams that caused all of this; and speaking of Williams, his despicable dirty "tactics" that caused Prichard's injuries should not be forgotten, crocodile tears after the fact be damned. The sport can't claim to have learnt from all this whilst Williams and the referee from that fight were not handed immediate bans from the sport.

Still remember the countdowns and the "fight day !" post right before the night his life changed forever.

RIP Prichard. A warrior before, during and after boxing.

As much as we all wish the ref was punished more for this, I genuinely think Williams should have been in prison for it.

Everyone in the sport knows the danger of rabbit punches… usually, we’re talking about slight shots around the ears, that at least look like they may be accidental.

Williams was folding Colon over, and throwing hard shots at the back of his skull. Dudes a complete scum bag.

Really had no words for this after the news. A terrible injustice, a waste of life and tragedy for his loved ones. It felt preventable in this case.

Cannot imagine another sport where illegal unsafe conduct and poor officiating had the outcome resulting in this injury(and now death). Yet all the participants all walk free and relatively unquestioned. I'm not even aware of any comments by referee. I wonder about investigations or inquiries?

Boxing is a sanctioned sport with rules and safety standards. It is not a blood sport FFS. Participants put their lives in other's hands.

I did read his opponent shown a little remorse since the incident but it's been very quiet all things considered.

Sadly enough, boxing has much more deaths than old school no holds barred cage fighting ever did.

Part of it is due to the knockdown rules and gloves. Similar to why NFL football is worse for brain health than Rugy.

Refs need to be stern about back of the head punches. Look at the UFC fight Gane vs Pereira. That was so dangerous.
