Recently watched Rafael Marquez's fights against Mabuza and in the rematch the commentary team mentioned that Mabuza turned down the opportunity to fight for the WBO 118 title. Jhonny Gonzalez was the champion with the WBO at the time and I was wondering what everyone thought of Mabuza's chances against a 24-year-old Jhonny Gonzalez? I kinda think that Mabuza gets overlooked these days, I hardly ever see him mentioned and he was a pretty capable fighter all in all.
I think it would have ended similarly to the Rafael Marquez fights. Gonzalez just as big of a puncher, if not a bit more than Marquez and also as technically sound as well. Gonzalez stops Mabuza in 6 rounds/
I liked Mabuza, but his level was such that even if He had a bit more luck and didn't have to fight one of the best if not the best bantamweight of his era for the title - He'd still be just a regular, solid beltholder at best. Jhonny was a bit more than that, winning titles in multiple divisions against more than average opponents. Silence would probably be more competitive against him than against Rafa - but I don't see him winning.
