FANTASY FIGHT: Gene Fullmer vs. Gennady Golovkin 15 Championship Rounds at 160 lbs. This content is protected A clash of granite chins and relentless forward pressure. In one corner, the rugged, awkward, cross-arm mauler from Utah who fought the absolute best of the 1950s. In the other, "Triple G", one of the most devastating, heavy-handed ring-cutters and knockout artists of modern times. 15 grueling rounds in the middleweight division. Does Fullmer out-muscle GGG on the inside, or does Golovkin's thudding jab and concussive power break the Cyclone down? Drop your pick and detailed breakdown in the comments! Official Rummy's Corner Neutral Ground Rules: Distance: 15 Championship Rounds. Weigh-In: Day-before weigh-in (24–36 hours prior) at the declared division limit. Equipment: Standard modern gloves (8 oz / 10 oz) and a 20-foot ring. Premise: Both fighters evaluated at their absolute physical and tactical peak at the weight. Looking to keep the focus on ring craft, style, and 15-round pacing. Cheers!
Hello, Rummy. In thinking about this, I thought about the 4 times Sugar Ray Robinson fought Fullmer. In my opinion, that past it Robinson's style was, at that point in his career, similar to Golovkin, patient (but without Golovkin's prime youthful stamina, which somewhat caused a little fading late for Robinson). I think that is significant in thinking about this matchup (Golovkin will not fade). In a single, 15 round fight, it would be hard to pick between these 2, but I will go with Golovkin by late surge, winning a close decision. Either, or both, could taste the canvas. I want to watch this fight!
Golovkin wastes Fullmer. The gulf in ability is astounding. Even the homecooking of Utah couldn't save Gene on this one.
This. Fullmer was rough and tough but also kind of wild. Golovkin's technical skills are simply flat out better. Watch the footage. GGG will use his jab to dictate the exchanges. Fullmer's cross guard is cute but in my opinion will not pose a problem to Golovkin. Rather, I think Gennady will exploit it with his own heavy body punching especially on the right hand side. Fullmer's loaded up punches are likewise going to be an opportunity rather than a problem for a master boxer like GGG. I also don't think that Fullmer's power is going to be as significant as people might think. Here we have Giardello, who was never exactly one of boxing's KO kings, slug it out the entire fight with Fullmer: This content is protected Note that I'm ignoring the weigh in disparity. Fullmer's best chance would be for a same day weigh in and hope that Golovkin is severely degraded as a result. A weigh in under modern rules would doom Fullmer because GGG seems to me to be significantly larger than the 5'7 Fullmer. That's the same height as Canelo but Canelo looks like a tank compared to Fullmer.
I feel I should favor GGG as others have pointed out, his technical skills and such but on Fulmer's side GGG never heard the bell for the 13th round and Fulmer is as rough as they come. If he gets past his jab GGG is in for a fight.
Golovkin would piece him up through the middle. I think he would start with quite a cautious fight-plan but it would become more and more apparent (not necessarily surprising to him) that he can win the overwhelming majority of the exchanges. I'll guess at a very late corner or cuts stoppage.
I think this is a blowout win for GGG. As much as I admire Fullmer's toughness and I respect that era he fought in with Giardello, Tiger, Hank, Robinson etc. None of those guys hit anywhere close to as hard as GGG did. Most of those guys would be light middleweight or welterweights in this era. GGG would never make 160 with same day weigh in rules.
If the fight is in Utah then Fullmer loses a split decision or draw after a foul filled brawl. Anywhere else GG takes a clear but tough decision or stops him late on cuts. If Gene doesn´t behave himself he get disqualified.
I tend to lean towards the old timers in these fantasy matchups but for this one I went straight for GGG. I just don’t see Fullmer having anything that dissuades Golovkin. Plus he’s bigger and hits harder. GGG by TKO some time between rounds 8-10.
Guys, I'm really stunned at some of the responses here, and from several guys whom I have a lot of respect for (and still do). I guess I'll be the first to say the emperor has no clothes. When I saw this matchup I said, "Good fight!" But for me, the outcome would never be in doubt. I would be looking at Fullmer on a 15 round decision. No question. I was always impressed with Golovkin but was never in awe. He came along in a very weak era at 160 and his methodical style behind his jab, jab, right ran roughshod over the era and he looked good doing it. But let's compare the comp. GGG fought Canelo Alvarez (3 times), Daniel Jacobs, Kell Brook, David Lemieux and Kasim Ouma. 20 years from now is anyone going to remember any of them outside of Canelo? Now let's look at Fullmer. He fought Sugar Ray (4 times), Dick Tiger (3 times), Carmen Basilio (twice), Joey Giardello, Paul Pender, Benny (Kid) Paret, Gil Turner (3 times) and Spider Webb (twice). And I left out top-notchers like Rocky Castellani, Florentino Fernandez, Eduardo Lausse, Charles Humez, Bobby Boyd and Del Flanagan. He also went 15 rounds 8 times and fought every puncher, boxer and boxer-puncher in the business. Do you really think there is something in GGG that Fullmer hadn't seen? Fullmer would make GGG realize very early that if you clinch with Fullmer, you'd better hold onto both arms because the free arm would be hitting him on top of the head, back of the head, in the kidneys, etc. He was just a roughhouse and a master at fighting ugly. I get it that GGG was very recent in everyone's mind, but let's not forget who came before and who they went through in order to get to the throne and hold it.
I agree with every word @scartissue said.Never got the Golovkin hype but i will give him some credit and think he goes the distance with Gene losing a competitve but clear decision
