Hype jobs who turned it around

On a lower level sorta kinda Bobby Czyz. For whatever reason he was hyped a bit as he came thru the ranks before being "exposed" by Mustafa Hamsho. Many thought he lacked substance and wasn't much good at all. He moved up and over time had a reasonable run at 175, grabbing a strap and making some money.

 

Wlad was seen as an heir apparent to Lewis, but after he got KOed by Sanders and Brewster was considered an exposed hype job. He came back to be one of the greatest HW champions of all time.

 

People said Calzaghe was a hype job but then he went undefeated and beat down Jones and Hopkins

 

I initially felt this way about Pacquiao. I wasn't a believer until he first stepped in the ring with Barrera. MAB was one of my favorite fighters at the time. I wondered what all the hype was about with this little Filipino fella, then I found out. I was pissed at the loss but he made a believer out of me. After his first fight with Morales I was a fan. He quickly became one of my all time favorite fighters.

When I saw him beat Byron Mitchell I stopped thinking he was all hype

 

Barrera will forever be a stud because of the way that he took Hamed to the turkey farm and plucked him clean

 

Glen Johnson started his career 32-0 against bad competition then lost 9 of his next 15.

 

Yes, he did have the undefeated streak until Hopkins.........................he wasn't a hype job though. No one really knew about him until he became a SMW stalwart. When I think "hype job", hype job is what I initially thought Calzaghe was, , what I thought Errol Spence was, what Amir Khan actually was...........someone getting a significant push. Glencoffe didn't get any of that

While I don’t gush over Da Preem he was better than many of the bottom out, negative descriptions assigned to him.

 

I guess there were many who maintained the belief that one Cassius Clay was a hype job (by and large a self created hype job at that, lol) through to and including the first Cooper fight.

Certainly, almost to a man, the pundits believed Ali would finally get his comeuppance in quick time against a real fighter and monster of the division in Sonny Liston.

Well, Ali’s win over Liston proved to be one of fastest turn arounds for a so called hype job.
