I love Basilio, and his upper body movement and aggression will have some initial impact, but his aggression doesn't have quite the dynamics and explosiveness Duran's did, so I can only draw so many parallels there. Leonard wins for sure I think.

 

well I'm not sure how he was perceived by Brits here in the 1980s, as I was living in Canada then, however there was definitely a sentiment for a period in North America where people began to take a dislike to him, so all I can say, is maybe some of our U.S friends here can remember such feelings or not.

On a side note, he is two months younger than me. I didn't realize young whippersnappers like him could be so smart.

 

Exactly how does that translate into Basilio holding Leonard in contempt?

He SRL, for a time, was seen as a cocky vain guy, just like SRR and as Basilio had some ill feelings towards Robinson...

in this Leonard Basilio FANTASY Fight,

it is just a scenario type of similar 'possible' set of feelings and attitudes fighters 'might' have had against one another, assuming in a Fantasy bout, the fighters 'might' also hold their unique & individual Personalities in precisely the 'same' manner in which we expect them to 'still' hold their own Fighting Styles.

Get a grip of yourself man.

 

I've already explained what Basilio's problem was with Robinson.

Tony DeMarco, Billy Graham, Gil Turner and the like were fine fighters but didn’t have the kind of speed, explosiveness and athleticism Ray Leonard possessed. These were the guys Carmen Basilio was keeping company with in his welterweight heyday.

I did check out highlights of Carmen’s split decision loss to Kid Gavilan to refresh myself as the Kid bore more resemblance to Leonard. The Onion Farmer scored an early knockdown and had his way early on with his aggressiveness, but Gavilan got his jab on track and everything began to flow starting around the sixth or seventh. He landed often and cleanly thereafter, while Basilio began to look predictable and lost some steam.

The Cuban Hawk planted himself in front of Carmen more than was wise, which made it more competitive than I think a Basilio-Leonard match would be. I see Leonard being selectively aggressive, more in line with how he fought Dave Boy Green … changing his look and angles often to keep Basilio from gaining forward momentum. When Ray would rip combos, I don’t think Carmen would have many answers.

Over 15, I figure it’s close through five. Then it’s all Ray. Leonard was a babyface killer, and once he sensed an advantage he would press it. Leonard lands clean and begins to tee off over the second half of the fight, lumping and busting Basilio up. Leonard would pay a price here and there, but his answers would be more emphatic than the questions Basilio would pose.

Call it 10-5 with a strong decision finish for Ray. In the last couple of rounds a stoppage is possible as he unloads and Carmen is too spent to do much about it, but Basilio makes the finish line — just barely.

I know Basilio was a tough as nails warrior but was he really in Leonard's class or would he take a terrific beating ? I favor Ray for sure ..

 

It's got to be Sugar Ray in this one imo.
But I'm not seeing a totally easy ride for the Sugar man.

 

I think Robinson looked at Basilio as Jim Norris's boy. IBC house fighter as opposed to Robinson who wouldn't sign exclusively with the IBC. Rather he stayed independent.

 

Basilio's managers kicked back to Carbo,but out of their ends ,not Carmen's.
