Terry Washington is an 8-0 (6 KO) 5'6 22 year old southpaw 108er with a rich amateur career who recently won a big step up in the pros. He won the 2019 US Junior Open, won a silver medal at the 2020 US Youth Championship, competed in the 2021 US National Junior Olympics at 101 pounds, and won a bronze at the 2021 US National Championship. As a pro, he debuted rattling off 3 easy KO wins over the 1-1 Ezequiel Robles Nungaray, the debuting Jose Daniel Castillo (RTD after 1), and the 3-6 Manuel De Jesus Hernandez Alonso before stepping up and fighting the notable journeyman and 21-14-4 Lito Dante for the WBF International Light Fly title. After 5 straight rounds for Washington, Dante was KOd in the 6th. To date, in 17 losses and 42 fights Dante has only been KOd 1 other time. That's despite Dante fighting US golden gloves champion Diego Aviles at 115 (UD loss for Dante), 108 Ring #5 Kyosuke Takami (although it was in his fifth fight, also a UD loss for Dante), the 15-3 future 105 world champion Vic Saludar, future 105 world champion Yudai Shigeoka and even getting a win over Takeshi Ishii, the current OPBF 105 champion (scheduled to fight Wilfredo Mendez) who is now 10-1. Back to Terry Washington, after that performance he stepped down slightly and fought 10-3 Nelvis Rodriguez and won by KO 2. Next, he fought 23-4 Ricardo Astuvilca for the vacant WBC USA Light Fly title in his first effort for a title from a major organization (and his first 10 round bout), and went the distance for the first time, winning by scores of 100-90x3. In his 7th pro outing, Washington fought yet another 10 round bout vs the 18-4 Eduardo Yudel Reyes Torres for the WBA's North American Boxing Association title. Washington dominated an easy bout and won in round 2 by KO. Finally, in his most recent bout, in an opportunity to be ranked by the WBA, Washington fought former world title challenger and contender Axel Alejandro Aragon Vega (then 18-6-1) AKA El Mini and picked himself off the canvas to win a close split decision, with judging by and scores of Ivan Guillermo 94-95 Donald Howard 96-93 Fernando Villarreal 95-94
Washington is one of the quickest guys in the sport right now. Worth a watch: This content is protected I think he needs to work on his lateral movement, but he might be a future champion. El Mini is no joke, and was en route to beat Kyoguchi before an injury forced him to pull out.
Agreed that Vega is a very solid fighter but he's not the biggest puncher, so getting hurt & knocked down by him raises some questions about Washington's chin. It was an excellent fight & hopefully a learning experience. I think Washington can make some noise at 108.
Quite liking how 108 is shaping up after Teraji moving up leaving a bit of a vacuum. Daiya Kira has impressed me a great deal in what I've seen of him, Canizales was and remains one of the sport's better little men, and plenty of good, young, talented fighters like Washington coming up. Suganob vs Nontshinga is a fight I'm also pretty excited for. I can't stand Rene Santiago though, and I'll be overjoyed when he gets dethroned. Washington could do well for himself in the current landscape of 108.
