My only issue with your scorecard is rounds 2 and 8.

Round 2 Hearns was active with the jab and he landed the best punches of the round 2 clean right hands. The 1 right hand just before the bell slightly wobbled Leonard when he switched southpaw.

For me it's a little bit of a reach to give Leonard that round TBH.

As for Round 8.

Leonard did a decent job of jabbing with Hearns in the 1st half of the round. But then Hearns got his attention with a clean right hand with 1 minute left to go, and landed some solid power punches in the final minute to win the round quite clearly in my view.

You'd have to give Leonard every somewhat debatable round to have it as a draw and that's a bit of reach honestly.

No Hearns didn't win it by a landslide but it was still a clear win in a competitive fight by a few points IMO.

Leonard even admitted Hearns won this fight which says it all.

I was so keyed up for this fight at the time but I believe I had to work, which would have been the only reason I missed it. When I heard how one-sided it was I never bothered with it. Changing that today. I was never big on Hopkins and I recall the bad blood that spilled over here from the pre-fight weigh-in (I believe it was) where Trinidad was holding a small Puerto Rican flag and Hopkins grabbed it and threw it to the ground (and did I hear he had to run out of the weigh-in because of that action???). But giving dues where they belong, Hopkins never looked better. But I will say what I always say about Felix, whom I was a big fan of. He was a great welterweight, he was a great jr. middleweight, but he never had the frame for middleweight. Moreover, i always felt the DeLaHoya fight did expose the fact that he never had a Plan B. If something wasn't working out he just kept trudging through with the same plan with no variation. And became clearer during this fight. The 10th round was about the best round here for swapping punches if anyone needs to check out the fight.

 

Not a great fight, Scar, but a great performance. I was a big Trinidad fan so was gutted when he lost. Interesting side note - the fight was postponed from its original fight date of 15th September because of 9/11. It took place 2 weeks later, not that I think it had any impact on how the fight unfolded.

 

Jel, tell me about that pre-fight altercation. Was i correct that Hopkins did something to desecrate the PR flag and had to high-tail it out of there?

I didn’t remember that but I just found some video of it on YouTube- just put Hopkins and Puerto Rico riot in and it’ll come up.

He grabbed the flag, threw it on the floor in front of a large crowd of Puerto Ricans and then, yep, he legged it out across the seating!

 

Your story about missing the fight for work reminded me of something.

Chavez-Taylor I was on my birthday. And I had to work.

Had a group of fight friends, one of whom was an apprentice chef. So we would pool some money for the fights and give it to John and he would go shop and cook us up something. (I think he liked doing that more than the fights, haha.)

Well they gathered in my apartment and videotaped the fight. I got home probably 30 minutes after it ended. They are all just grinning, saying ‘John’s got a plate for you to heat up, but watch the fight first.’

So we watched and, well, you know how it ended.

After, they brought out my food and a birthday cake (from the grocery, he was a cook but not a baker, haha) and ice cream,we all dug in and had a great night. I think we rewinded and watched it again over cake.

Happy times.

 

That is an awesome memory. Fight night always brings that out.

 

Just checked it out. Bad move on Hopkins part but I'm sure it inspired the gate.

Despite GGG holding the belt and having 20 pro bouts, let me tell ya, he was raw here. When he got more seasoning, he learned to take his time. But he was a bit wild here. Regarding Ouma, he really didn't deserve this fight for the title. He was a career jr. middle who had one win at middleweight, had dropped 5 out of his last 7 fights, and he's fighting for the title. Come on! Regardless, he put up a good scrap through about 6 rounds with his speedy combos before GGG's shots took their toll. I had it a bit wider than the judges and gave GG a 2 point round in the 9th when he just battered Ouma. I was really stunned to see the corner and the ref allow him out for the 10th. Man, both eyes just about swollen shut, taking a licking and I'm yelling at the PC, "Will you stop the fight!!!" Until finally the ref intervened. Ouma had one brave corner to allow this 9th and 10th round thumping.

 

Evander Holyfield v Ray Mercer

Although many rounds were close, I liked Holyfield's workrate and jolting shots. Mercer did very well and had Holy in some tough moments with that cut late in the fight and they turned in a good finale in the 10th that had them both looking worse for wear. Good fight.

 

A few days late, but watched Lennox Lewis v Michael Grant. Short, but good performance from a prime Lennox Lewis.

My score: 6-5 for Walcott (due to the missing round). The judges: 7-4, 8-4 and 7-5 all for Walcott.

Walcott's second defense of the title, whereas for the challenger in Marciano this was his first title shot. To start off, fans and experts are right to consider this one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time. I think you could say this is the best heavyweight fight of the 1950's. A great display of valor, strength and technique (I was surprised at Marciano's counter punching ability and Walcott's inside work). I decided to watch this fight since: A - we recently had a huge comeback victory in last Saturday's heavyweight contest, B - today is Marciano's birthday, so I decided to rewatch this again. I had the fight a little closer than the judges had it, I perhaps gave Marciano some extra credit in the close rounds. People here on the forum and on other sites have written more on this fight and better than I could, so my advise for you would, to watch the fight! You won't regret it!
