It's teling that he has got most mentions so far, I think, while there are fighters that was way more past it at that point.

 

The thing is Tyson wasn't considered past it at all.

 

Not after the Bruno fight, no. I remember the expert commentator in the Swedish broadcast, former European champion Steffen Tangstad, saying something like "he's back to what he was, he's even better" when Tyson stopped Bruno. A bit caught up in the moment, but I would guess that most took for pretty much granted that he would run through the division again. Does anyone remember articles from the time about that?

 

What were people saying about Benitez before fighting Hamsho and Bowe heading into the Golota fight? Yes, it’s easy to incorrectly expect a fighter in their twenties to be prime.

 

I'm sure there was a cover of The Ring which said the rest of the field were 6/1 and worse against him. It was mainly blue background cover iirc. I'm going totally on memory but it was after Lewis had barely scraped by Mercer, Bowe looked awful v Golota and Evander had struggled to get Bobby Czyz out of there. Meanwhile Tyson had terrified Bruno, and maybe Seldon too, when this magazine came out.

 

Surely the answer should be a lot of fighters. If you've trained for years, say, since mid-teens, spent a lot of time in the gym, fought regularly - that will take a toll. Also the mental aspect must be finite. How much of an appetite can a man have for being punched before that urge wanes? I would imagine many fighters hit their peak well before 30.

And yet, if we look at the current Ring lb for lb top ten - how many are mid to late 30s? A lot more than lb for lb top tens in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Nowadays, the peak of top fighters comes well after 30 and I wonder if it's less to do with modern wonder nutrition and more about not sparring all the time, fighting less regularly and generally suffering less wear and tear. The result being primes appear to last longer, while the proliferation of belts allows careful matchmaking to cover up or at least not expose the decline. And if I'm honest, a thinner talent pool stretched over so many belts has allowed this mediocrity to give the illusion that the modern boxer can defy father time. They can't. It's just that they don't have to fight the man who'd prove otherwise.
