Which So Called Great Fighter Never Impressed You?

Usyk is brilliant, yet his boxing style is unassuming. He is an awkward opponent to face. He does exactly what is needed. You have to look closely to truly appreciate his genius. He isn't flashy, but he is absolutely complete.

 

I know and I agree, it's just when he first came into recognition, it was also part of a show & dance with a bit of arrogance, he was excellent and he did seem a bit more settled when I saw him later on, or since... just a bit of a put off personality early,. Just Fight!

Bowe only has one loss in his record because his resume was sub-par. He fought 5 reigning top 10 ranked contenders in his entire career, one of whom in Golota was kicking his ass until his crazy ass disqualified himself. And he didn't get stopped by Hide or Gonzalez because they're weak contenders. I said "Elite" punchers, not anyone with a punch. Again I'm not saying Bowe is a bum, just not as impressive as I expected considering his reputation as some sort of H2H god and boogyman.

And idk about "Boxer". He uses his jab exclusively as an offensive weapon to get inside, he doesn't use it nor does he use his ring IQ to set up punches. He gets inside and throws many a pooch

Canelo stepped into the ring as high as 173lbs as a LMW, and was so damn heavy for the weight he had like 6 consecutive catch-weight title defences at the weight he weighed more at LMW Middle than Golovkin did at MW and he barely weighed less than Froch did at SMW! He's at the bare minimum a natural Middleweight, he's just short. It's not unprecedented to expect a prime ATG MW / SMW to have a competitive fight against a prime LHW. But he got utterly dominated by Bivol. He only beat a past prime, alcoholic spiraling Kovalev in a short notice fight that I believe was only 6 weeks after his previous title defence, at a catch-weight, with a rehydration clause! Then the ****er had the audacity to say he's chasing greatness

And I think Froch would lose in a P4P sense I mean regardless of size. If he were naturally heavier I think he'd be just as unsuccessful due to his lack of defensive skillset.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Watching his fights always put me to sleep. He wouldn't even try to stop overmatched opponents like Berto, or smaller guys like Marquez and Guerrero, he just ran out the clock for decision wins. I suppose that way was safer than going for a knockout, but it wasn't entertaining.

Muhammad Ali once said to be a great fighter, you sometimes have to take risks. Mayweather would never take a risk.

Pernell Whitaker.

Undeniably a great fighter but he had a style I just didn’t enjoy.

He was a southpaw which isn’t automatically a negative but the southpaws I like are Marvin Hagler and Cornelius Boza-Edwards - strong jabs and physically impressive.

Yeah, I know Whitaker could dig when he wanted to but I found his points-scoring punches usually just lacked the bite I want to see. He knew he could get by on his defensive skills and he was obviously a defensive genius so I can’t really blame him for that and you have to respect what he achieved as well but… no, just not for me.

 

I think he got more risk averse as he got older. The last 10 years and 10 fights were very much defined by that.

 

Bowe hits about as hard as Tyson Fury? What..? Bowe was a fearsome puncher, Tyson Fury not.

Agreed about the Canelo part.

 

Yes, seriously. Hopkins and Ward were both boring and dirty fighters. Wlad was a jab-and-grab one dimensional fighter, not very entertaining. Floyd was a boring fighter who never truly challenged himself. Never fought an elite level fighter at their best. See the pattern here? Boxing is a spectator sport...it's supposed to entertain fans, not put them to sleep.

You missed the first half of his career.

Back in the day, he was offensive and aggressive.

A good combination puncher

It was the second half of his career in which he slowed down.

He didn’t have the power needed to have knocked those guys out that you mentioned.

He also had injured hands at that stage.

He was having injections in them at that point.

You can throw a lot of criticisms at Floyd, for various things.

But you can’t really criticise his defensive style or his lack of knockouts at the higher weights.

The Gatti and Hatton fights were good.

The Cotto and Canelo ones.

They weren’t boring.

You have to look at who he fought, and how they matched up stylistically.
