Greater female boxer: Katie Taylor or Claressa Shields

I just feel the real talent in women's boxing is the lower weights. The best female fighters all competed 130-147 and taylor largely came out on top

My view is muddled a little by the fact I thought she was 0-1-1 vs persoon and 1-2 vs serrano but there seems to be plenty of views with different scores.

Shields is talented and was a 2x Olympic gold medalist and has dominated the field. I just dont think the field was that strong

Think of it this way, when Harper and Jonas were no longer elite they moved up 2 or 3 weights and easily won titles. That would never happen in mens boxing

Her resume is on a whole different level. I know that’s not always everything but she’s actually proven her skills against a murderer’s row, at least as much of a murderer’s row that women’s boxing has yet produced. Shields fights in divisions with like eight women fighting in them. She hasn’t really proved anything.

It's not just about the resume either it's also the eye test, when I watch Taylor I can see talent there, Shields moves about the ring like a baby that's dumped in its nappy, it's comical.

 

Agreed Taylor has fought the much better opponents including a lot of long reigning champions like Serrano and Persoon. Shield's best win is Marshall apart from her the rest of her resume is full of nobodies.

 

Not going to debate the Taylor being better aspect but I do think that, rather than cherry picking, there just is very little talent in and around her weight classes. That being said, against the three legitimate women she fought, Savannah Marshall, Hanna Gabriels and Christina Hammer, she did not have many problems.

 

Shields, Taylor has too many gifted decisions.

Chris I know you're not a fan of Taylor but I respect this post because it is true.

Compare Taylor’s opposition to Shields and its night/day difference.

Also with 2 minute rounds when you are on average fighting against better opposition. It will be harder to split the two fighters, especially when they are more evenly matched without the extra minute to really see a clear decisive round.

Hence you see more debatable decisions in Taylor’s fights.

So whilst people can discredit some of Taylor’s close decision.

The gulf in opposition between Taylor and Shields automatically favours Taylor as the better fighter in my view.

 

I agree some of the scoring has been suspect, but I think tge points made above about quality of opposition are valid.

 

I don't disagree that Taylor has fought in a stronger division, AND she has lost 4 fights on my scorecards in those divisions. Shields has been absolutely dominant and hasn't ducked anyone. Also, her fight with Marshall was 50/50 on the betting odds and she dominated. Remember how psyched all the British fans were for that one?

 

I don't like either of them for different reasons. Shields because of her abrasive personality and Taylor because of her being protected. The Irish treat her like a famous and successful IRA soldier.

Therefore I abstain from voting and awaiting a third party candidate.
