I don't think James Toney ever beats Roy. James always blames the extreme weight loss but the reality is James was a counter puncher that thrived against bangers that would attack him. Roy would use his speed and awkwardness to land and get out of the way. He was smart enough to stay out of the kitchen against James how for all his bravado, was not an overly aggressive guy. He was methodical and used an opponents aggression against themselves.

The second act of James Toney was always against Sluggers/swarmers. After the Montell Griffin fights, he never faced a speedy fighter again.

 

Michael Spinks against Mike Tyson. Slow starter, wrong style and inadequate chin for that type of power ( even though Spinks chin was solid for 175. ). Now to be clear I’ve never believed that Spinks was prime for that 1988 meeting nor was he psychology up for the task. In fact, it always appeared to me like he flopped. Under different circumstances he MIGHT have lasted a bit longer and given Tyson a better fight. But I can’t ever see him winning it outright.

 

He did catch Roy with some shots in their fight, but Roy took them. Maybe he'd eventually fight paydirt if given enough changes, idk.

 

I remember when the fight happened, I expected Herans to win by decision, too tall too much reach and a better boxer. But I sure as Hell didn't see that second round knockout happening, leaving Duran on his face.

Maybe. But Fitz was on the literal butt end of his career and gave Jeffries some problems.

 

Nobody definitely beats anyone always, but there are times when without a major malfunction like the favorite gets sick victory is highly unlikely.

Maybe the closest thing to certainty you can see is this.
Until you get later in life Stephen J.Hawkins (without the wheelchair) against presumably Ricardo Lopez, maybe this bout would be most one sided...

Apologies for being pedantic, as I agree no version of Duran beats a prime Hearns, but Hearns was 6ft 1ins and Duran 5ft 7ins, a 6"/15cm difference, as you state.

Bivol is 6ft and Bam Bam 5ft 4ins, an 8"/20cm discrepancy.

Holmes had a number of them------not just that Cobb fight. David Bey. Scott Frank. Lorenzo Zanon. Evangelista was another. Scott Ledoux had zero chance. What was that other guy--Rodriguez or something from like 1984?

 

Lucien Rodriquez. And he was quite awful. I think he and Evangelista fought a few times.
Probably the worst of Holmes challengers and he had some real duds at points.

 

Liston vs Patterson. Personally can’t see an intimidated or unintimidated Floyd ever winning against Sonny.
