George Engel confronts Tunney’s cheating allegations against Greb

[Gene Can Have Return Match If He Doesn't Speak Too Harshly of Harry]

“Gene Tunney need never worry at getting a return match with Harry Greb, for the bounding Pittsburger will be glad to accommodate him any time he is ready. To get another chance for title that once reposed on his dome of thought Gene must stop telling folks he was unjustly whipped by means of foul tactics and admit that the better man won. If he continues to throw slurs in Greb's direction he'll never get the opportunity to re-establish himself in the good graces of his Greenwich Village followers.

It is not often that George Engel talks out of his turn, but the manager of the new champion stoutly defends his protege's style of milling in the Tunney fracas.

"Tunney says unfair tactics, such as indiscriminate use of his head in the clinches and hitting low," opened up Engel. "but he knows deep down in his heart that he was licked fair and square. This is the first time l've ever heard a squawk from one of Harry's opponents, and he has fought several hundred men. Everybody knows Greb is one of a few of the cleanest boxers in the pastime. He doesn't have to resort to mean tricks to win. He's got so much class over the many middle, light heavy and heavyweights that I have all I can do to induce some of them to step in the ring with him.

"We'll give Tunney another chance, but he'll have to stop alibiing, that is, quit saying he was fouled out of his title. Do you know that in the thirteenth round Greb begged me to let him go out and knock Gene out, but I told him to take it easy, because he was so far ahead and he didn't have to score a K. O. to insure victory.

"As soon, as Tunney comes out and says he was whipped fair and square," concluded Engel. "we'll sign up for another fight. Until then he'll have to box some suckers and wait, until we are good and ready to box him again."
