Christian Mbilli will defeat Canelo Alvarez

It's not about money at this point for Canelo. Between his boxing earnings and his businesses (he owns a ton of stuff in Mexico; gas stations, convenience stores, alcohol brands, energy drink brands, rental properties, etc), he's probably worth north of $500mil. He's an aging ATG who can't give it up, can't admit he's not who he used to be.

I'd be surprised if he wins this one. If he loses this, he should consider retirement. Ok, I'd imagine even if he were to retire, he'd fight a few cans in Mexico first as a goodbye tour, but still.

Not a very hot take. But it's the first canelo fight I am looking forward to since like ggg 2

 

This really is a litmus test type of fight. Canelo from a few years ago would have torn Mbilli apart with counters. His style is still made for Canelo to thrive off of but I don't know if Alvarez still has that fire or the physicality. I think Alvarez will win a competitive decision type of a fight.

That said I like Mbilli, he is explosive and aggressive and throws hard punches. He showed plenty of toughness as well. I look forward to this fight

 

Wouldn't be surprised. Canelo may be at the point in his career where he's a complete shell of what he used to be. He's already obviously been slipping for a while, but the surgery/inactivity might be the nail in the coffin. From the clips I've seen of him training, he looks quite stiff and substantially slower than even a couple years ago.

 

If anything I see this going the opposite way; Mbilli will fight on the front foot and have some success, but this will only play in to Canelo's counterpunching style, and I see him clipping and stopping Mbilli to get his first stoppage win in a long while.

 

To be honest, Mbilli isnt anything special - but I do agree Canelo is probably well past his best days.

 

He’s tailor made for Canelo stylistically, but he’s also the kind of fighter who it is hell to get old against… Intense, strong, high volume, physical….

Wouldn't be that surprising. Wouldn't even be too surprised to see Canelo go down or be stopped here for the first time. He's already slowed down and is coming off of the longest layoff he's had in years, following an embarrassing loss to a blown up welterweight in Crawford. Canelo doesn't have issues with come forward big punchers as much as he does with movers, but one of Mbili's major strengths is his stamina which Canelo has always struggled with. If Mbili can find Canelo enough and can target his body, which basically nobody has done effectively thus far, then I think there's a real possibility Canelo is grinded down and stopped late. Depends on how much he has left though and how if Mbili can survive Canelo's early round counters.

 

Shame if he loses to Mbili.

Yeh I agree. I’d actually be surprised if Canelo won. Unfortunately for canelo he will suffer the same thing as Floyd and Pac in their later careers….anyone he fights will turn up in the absolute best shape of their life. Mbilli is already good for 12 rounds, I imagine he’ll be a machine on the night of this fight. Canelo has slowed down a lot, so even though Mbilli will be there infront of him all night, I don’t think Canelo will be able to hack to pace if he can’t hurt Mbilli early and Canelos handspeed has diminished a lot along with his great combinations, head movement etc
