Francesco Damiani vs Leon Spinks primes

Damiani cleans him up. He'd have cleaned up the versions of Ali that Spinks fought too.

 

The Leon that knocked out Mercado would win. But most days Damiani would win.

 

Damiani was good enough to beat Leon.

 

Spinks was, no matter what anyone else says, a real boxing champion. Damiani was more of a mayor. And some people really dug him as a mayor and lawyer but in terms of physical violence, he thought he'd been seriously attacked when someone barely touched his back. Spinks would do more than that. He wouldn't know what to do about it. This is boxing. It's a tough game. You don't wear no tie during boxing.

 

At his best, Leon UD, if not Damiani by TKO late.

 

Leon, for all his shortcomings, was an in-your-face guy who initiated trench warfare.

He was also good at punching people in the schnoz, of which Frankie Damiani was not fond.

Neon Leon in his prime is on Damiani like a cheap suit and unrelenting until the Italian finds a way to see himself out — TKO by eight.

The only neon sign I see is pink, right over Spinks' head and says "loser" in flashing letters. Let's face it, it's true. Leon lost every time he stepped up in class. His best win is a shot to pieces Ali and frankly a lot of guys would have stomped that dude. Spinks huffed and puffed and managed a draw with Scott LeDoux. Then he tried his luck against Gerrie Coetzee and found his proper level: horizontal.

Damiani is far too big, too gritty and too skilled for a guy as light in the pants as Leon Spinks.

Damiani’s lone ‘step-up’ win was when he stopped a Tyrell Biggs coming off his savage beating at the hands of Mike Tyson … on cuts.

He didn’t have the grit, but he had a glass nose.

Leon would bop him on his beak and Francesco would be done.

Broad, Biggs, Du Plooy, Page and hell, even Eklund are useful wins.

He didn't have a glass nose, but you know what he had which Spinks didn't have? A win over Rocky Sekorski.

Guess what else Spinks doesn't have which Damiani has? A win against the mighty Kevin P Porter

Porter and Sekorski sometimes meet up for drinks, and discuss the time they beat up Neon Leon.

 

I’d say 99% of the time Damiani wins unless Leon is having an exceptionally good night.

 

Briggs is the only one of the above who ever had any utility, and Frankie D caught him when he was broken by Tyson and had taken a year off due to drug problems … and only won by cuts.

Du Plooy was a suspect who never quite became a prospect, feasting on a few carcasses of guys who still barely had names like way post-prime Mike Weaver (with whom he split iirc). Page already had 10 losses and was more notable as a sparring partner by the. Time Frankie fought him. Eklund was pure Euro trash. James “Broad Ass” Broad was notable only because he beat Marvis Frazier in the amateurs and Bonecrusher in Bone’s debut (when Broad was more experienced with a real amateur background and several pro fights, which James didn’t have).

The thesis here is prime vs prime.

If Frankie D had hung around to take his beatings in his declining years, we’d have a long list of sketchy losses. Only he was in position to get out while the getting was good — props to him on that. Leon was not so fortunate.

You know who Leon beat? Muhammad freaking Ali … Frankie never beat anyone version of any fighter so notable. His win over Bernardo Mercado is better than any win on the records of Frankie the Nose. In fact, Leon beat Damiani’s undefeated Italian predecessor, Alfio “Spaghetti” Righetti to get his shot at Ali.

Leon was even a better amateur than The Nose … he won Olympic gold and Frankie only won silver.

Admit it: You nose and I nose that Frankie da Nose never, ever on his best day beats the best version of Dracula Spinks.

 

Can't wait until you apply your critical eye to such momentous Leon victories as Jose Ribalta, Rocky Sekorski, Angelo Musone, Jim Ashard and Scott LeDoux. Oh ... wait ... he never beat those guys

Damiani destroys him. Leon Spinks was not world class despite his amature pedigree. He lost too many times to be favored
