He understands the psychology of the hypejob-defender better than anyone, given it is his own.

 

Itauma's hype was ridiculously out of hand. People were literally declaring him as a guaranteed GOAT and making mythical match ups with Ali and Mike Tyson.

Like looking great for the first couple rounds is one thing. But, when you have so many unknowns in your game - thats when it gets deluded to enough people.

 

One thing I do like about this thread is that (for a change!) 2 main posters can agree to disagree / make their points in a respectful manner

 

I agreed completely with the original premise of the thread, but seeing you compare Hrgovic who is an Olympic medallist, decorated amateur, has only one very debatable career loss to a fellow elite opponent and now 2-time champion Dubois, to scrubs like Martin and Stiverne, makes me question the motive behind this thread. I'm wondering if you're just salty Itauma lost tbh.

Depends whether you define a hype job as someone who doesn’t become an all time great with an incredible cv or doesn’t amount to anything impressive, didn’t live up to the hype, but how do you draw that line? Joshua is a gold medalist, two time heavyweight champion and unified at a point. He has some very good victories, some alright, some whatever. Two bad losses and two competitive losses. Can take his cv apart and critique it or praise it depending who you measure it against. Neutrally it’s better than like 90% of boxers can dream of, is he a hype job on the level of David price? Definitely not. But he clearly fell far short of where he was apparently destined for, a lot of people predicted he wouldn’t reach that high but still thought he was a good fighter, I think he deserved a proportion of such hype. Look at what they built Itauma up as after so many fights, he’s very talented and exciting but that was far worse than Joshua’s hype train and arrogance.
