The man who died after being shot outside a community centre at Punchbowl has been identified as a prominent Sydney boxing coach and son of a former professional boxer.

A prominent boxing coach has been gunned down just moments after walking out of a gym in Sydney’s southwest, in the latest suspected underworld-linked attack.

Louis Meehan, the 32-year-old son of former professional boxer Kali Meehan, was ambushed by a gunman as he walked through the carpark of the Punchbowl Community Centre on Rossmore Ave, at Punchbowl, about 5.50pm.

It is understood the killer yelled out Meehan’s name before opening fire in front of shocked witnesses, including schoolkids.

NSW Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics were soon on scene and attempted to treat him at the scene, as onlookers fell to their knees in prayer, but he could not be saved.

A key focus of the early police investigations will centre around a vehicle seen driving away in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Officers from the Campsie Police Area Command established a crime scene spanning large parts of the Punchbowl CBD.

Meehan is understood to have owned a boxing gym in Punchbowl and had worked with a number of prominent fighters, including former NRL player Curtis Scott and Jai Opetaia.

Wednesday night’s assassination comes with Sydney already on edge over the rapidly escalating underworld violence, largely in the city’s south-west and western suburbs.

Dozens of children were inside the Punchbowl community centre when the shooting unfolded metres away, leaving a mother pleading for an end to the violence.

Amir Khaled was picking up her daughter from the Punchbowl Community Centre, where she had been attending an after-school tutoring session, when she learned of the shooting nearby.

Ms Khaled said she was shocked to discover her daughter had been inside the centre with dozens of other children.

“I’m very shocked, my heart’s racing, my whole body is numb that my daughter was right there near the car park inside the centre,” she said.

“Not only my daughter but a dozen other kids.”

She immediately asked her daughter whether she had heard or seen anything.

Her daughter told her they had only realised something had happened after seeing police and ambulances outside.

When asked about the ongoing gang violence gripping Western Sydney, Ms Khaled issued a plea to those behind it.

“You have to stop, stop. This needs to stop,” she said.

“It’s not normal.”

Last week the nation was shocked by back-to-back fatal shootings which claimed the lives of two innocent men, neither with any links or involvement in organised crime.

The first saw Marco Tapia, 23, shot dead in his bedroom when balaclava-clad gunment broke into his family’s Glen Alpine home on Tuesday morning.

Then, barely 36 hours later, Joshua MacDonald, 40, was gunned down outside a home at Merrylands West on Wednesday afternoon.

The latest evolution of Sydney’s gang war is believed to centre largely around a conflict between the Coconut Cartel and the infamous Alameddine crime clan.

Both groups have been involved in tit-for-tat shootings across the city over recent months.

Police believe one of the biggest factors in their inability to contain the violence is the fact the alleged leaders of both groups are living overseas.

Anthony Pele and Iziah Utai, the alleged co-leaders of the Coconut Cartel, were last known to be in South East Asia, while the alleged boss of the Alameddine crime clan, Rafat Alameddine, is currently living in Lebanon.

The Telegraph revealed on the weekend that NSW Police are pushing hard for the Albanese government to expedite red notice applications which would bring them to the attention of international jurisdictions.

Organised crime violence has been an all too common occurrence on Sydney’s streets since 2020.

But having ebbed and flowed over the years, including a period of relative quiet across much of July and August, the explosion in gang violence last week led to demands for change.

Premier Chris Minns on Monday announced a suite of new laws which he said he hoped would put a dent in the crime wave.

“This is immoral, evil behaviour from organisations that are intent on making money from the misery of other people in our community and we are determined to stop it,” Mr Minns said.

The proposed legislation include interim serious crime prevention orders (SCPOs) which have been used to limit the freedoms of senior gang figures, in every way from what suburbs they can be in, to who they can speak to.

Life sentences were also introduced for more offences linked to organised crime and tougher penalties too for youth offenders.

Mikaelian has been pictured with Opetaia with both the Zuffa and WBC belts present.

That the WBC's official website continues to ignore the Opertaia-Mikaelian fight like it isn't even happening is probably indication enough they intend to strip Mikaelian. Though ironically, he is still listed on their site as their champion.

I suspect Mikaelian hasn't broken the WBC's rules until he actually steps into the ring.

Will be interesting to see whether Mikaelian brings the WBC belt into the ring with him.

The sanctioning body’s are basically hanging themselves at this stage. Mikaelian is WBC champion and Opetaia is rated their #1 contender. Make that make sense.

The IBF is even better. Current number 1 is Nyika who was flatlined by #3 Opetaia.

Ring Mag champ = real champ.
