All things considered that was an atrocious performance from Benn. He came out aggressively against the most dangerous counterpuncher in the division and arguably the fasted hands in boxing. I mean seriously did he delude himself into believing he was a killer? That was easily one of the worst ever British world title challenges in recent years. A dehydrated skeletal Bellew put a better performance in against Stevenson and that itself was a terrible performance.
Im not sure what Benn’s tactics were ? He was getting caught with left hook a fair bit in the first round and for me it was as if Benn was making a statement ‘I can take your left hook, he didn’t account for the overhand right which dropped him.
I thought he had an OK first round and that Garcia was probably throwing too many left hooks too early. But he’s come out in the second round and walked into an absolute ****ing beauty of a right hand.
It was a great shot. I don’t like Benn but i think his chin is decent. That punch drops any Welterweight, but i dont agree about Benn having an okay first round, sure he was game but was marked up and took some big shots. Benn came out far too aggressive for me. I thought he might have boxed more like his second fight with Eubank.
The Ref did the correct thing to protect the few brain cells that Benn owns. Everyone pre-fight - myself included - was talking about the left hook of Garcia but boy, the right that flattened Benn was a thing of beauty, bang on the button. Only ever going to be one very quick outcome after that. The warning signs were already there with Garcia staggering Benn a couple of times. Benn needs to fight for The Southern Area Title next and work his way back up. This is what happens when you build up a career feasting upon mismatched journeymen and those who have checked out years ago (Algieri, Prograis, Van Heerden, etc). You end up unprepared for the big guns. Trilogy £££ cashout v CEJ next - hence why Benn says he is moving up to 168. Boots, Fundora, Kelly, Zayas all toy with him at ease at 154 hence he is and will avoid this weight class. Same with the guys at 160. I cannot see where Benn goes from here bar CEJ, Cashout and retire. 154, 160 and 168 all eat him alive as do the top guns at 147.
Dana white has had his pants down. They seem to know absolutely nothing about boxing. Benn is a domestic fighter. He looked so out of of his depth.
