What percentage of this board has left or is inactive since this thread originally ended? Well over 50%....

 

Also, people now seem to dispute Oliavare's status as a truly great fighter because of multiple reasons, among them

A) He has an ugly record from carrying on too long, which is also marred because of his training habits.
B) Traveling far too high in weight, that put him at a serious size disadvantage

But there was a time where he was perceived to be a great fighter and I still believe it.

 

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any bantamweight better than those 2.

 

Right. Olivares loved a few cervezas or more.

Complete fighter against wrecking ball in a fight that would have been a thriller at Bantamweight.

I think Jofre would have been able to stand his ground and beat Olivares at his own game in a firefight.

 

This is one of those matchups that I love, while I personally favor Jofre for all the reasons mentioned there's no way, no way, I'd criticize anyone for taking Reuben Olivares in a matchup at 118 lbs.Two mega-great fighters from a now by gone era.

This matchup pits the 1/2 at BW, at whichever way you favour, I have to admit to a fondness for Olivares, he along with Napoles shaped my teenage tears following boxing, whenever he fought I counted the hours to Friday when the local sweet shop ( that's what we called them ) would receive his 10 or so copies of Boxing News, mine was on his reserve list, as I approached he would fold the mag back to front, so as I wouldnt see the front page and maybe the result of any big fight, anal I know, but I was like that back then, would then shove down my trousers, get the bus home, run up stairs ( no lift in them days ) to my mum and dads small council flat, put on the kettle, took about a day to boil, open the biscuit tin, grab one, put my pyjamas on ( comfort ) and enjoy, oh were was I, yes me and Olivares go back, that said I would pick Jofre ( my No 1) to win, after a early war of attrition, and taking Rueben's vaunted left hook, I believe he would stop my idol late in a 15 rounder, if only....
