1968 Sonny Liston vs 1987 Evander Holyfield

I think the best Liston is a big ask for any fighter in history. But this isnt the best Liston. I think Holyfield takes this. Liston couldn't scare him, I don't think this Liston can stop him and I know he can't out work him over the distance. In short, I can't see how THIS Liston beats this Holyfield.

 

I wrote that Holyfield was ranked #1 heavyweight in 87, since edited, but that was '88. belay my last means never mind.

Holyfield wouldn't come in weighing 190. I bet he could come in at about 202. He was skinny as a cruiserweight. Some of you guys underrate Holyfield, all-time P4P great.

Liston was near the end (wasn't his last fight in '69?). Old Liston, good as they said he could look, beats a young, but experienced Holyfield? I don't think so. I'll leave it at that.

 

I think 200lb Holyfield gives most of the greats a night to remember. I think he is underrated at his smaller size and hos achievements are somewhat dismissed by many with a 'Roidfield' comment. I think Evander beating Bowe, Foreman and old Larry are better wins than beating the version of Tyson he did, yet it is that achievement over a diminished Mike that most remember him for...Hell, I think the way he lost to Bowe twice is better than beating Mike.

 

Holyfield held up Foreman and Holmes, just enough to get the wins. But he boxed really well in doing that. Watch Holmes and Foreman fights again, if you dare, and you will definitely see what a good boxer Holyfield was. A good/great technical boxer.. should have got the Olympic gold with a rare kind of ease (him and Spinks, actually).. but, no. Tough luck, maybe next time for him.

 

I think they are fine wins, that is the point I was making man, better wins than over the Tyson he beat.

 

Alright, correct call. I backed you up, so.. really, I'm just saying other people should watch those fights again, if they can take it, to see a P4P boxer carrying HOFers and making it look real.

I bet the majority would rather watch a Tyson whitewash. Oh, like Tyson-Holmes, for example.

One last thing.. Holyfield carried Foreman.. but he did take Foreman's best shots in doing so (not '87 but..) . So old Liston?

Holyfield said he thought a single Foreman punch had knocked his teeth out. You don’t carry someone whose punches have that effect.

And there was also Evander’s endless stream of power shots, clearly intended to put Foreman out that failed to even put George down.

 

Holyfield carried Foreman ? He hit Foreman over 300 times and viciously tried to take Foreman's head off with like 20 consecutive punches in their famous 7th round.

I know you're a Holyfield fan which is fine but that comment is simply not true.
