Pernell Whitaker v Aaron Pryor

Crazy fight ... its tough to punch against Whitaker ever but the swarming speed and power of Pryor would be amazing to watch ..

 

Whitaker surely schools him.

He’d constantly check lead hook him on the way in and see the returns coming all night long.

 

Pryor by decision. Aaron had the speed and more importantly the volume punching to throw a guy like SweetPea off. Pryor also had an awkward punching style, he threw from so many odd angles.
With Whitaker not being a power puncher Pryor's volume attack would be effective.
Its like Freddie Brown once said about Marciano. "this ain't like football because Rocky never gives you the ball". I don't think Aaron Pryor would give Pernell the ball.

No because Pryor had already been in a crackhouse for 2 or 3 years when he fought Hinton. He walked in started smoking and basically never walked out.

 

To be fair, Whitaker functioned at a much higher level as a cocaine abuser than Pryor.

 

Well Pryor beat Arguello the 2nd time just 1 and a half years prior to fighting Hinton.

So going by your timeline Pryor must of been on crack fighting Arguello aswell.

Maybe you're not giving Hinton enough credit for being a stylistic problem for Pryor.

Personally I don't get the insane hype with Pryor.

He beat a past it Cervantes.

His first win over Arguello was very tainted and Arguello's best weight clearly wasn't 140.

Yes Pryor was very exciting and his swarming style would be a problem for alot of Jr Welterweights.

But I do think he gets overrated.

And a reckless fighter like Pryor with no defence is not beating Whitaker IMO.

 

He’s mixing up the timelines for Hinton and Bobby Joe Young.

 

Pryor was deep in the midst of drug addiction when he fought Hinton.

He fought 7 times in 1980, twice in 81, 3 times in 82, 2 times in 83 and when he faced Hinton he'd fought once in 18 months. He didn't fight post Hinton for almost 2 1/2 years because of his drug addiction and was a shell when he did.

Pryor wasn't remotely near his best vs Hinton. Not in the same stratosphere. He was never any good after the Arguello rematch. Life in the fast lane destroyed his career when he should have been cashing in and soaring.

 

Fair enough that Pryor wasn't at his best but I still think the Hinton fight has some relevance that Pryor may struggle stylistically with a slick southpaw like Whitaker.

But again maybe I'm a bit biased because I'm not the biggest fan of Pryor. I think he's overrated personally and the 1st Arguello fight leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm almost positive that fight wasn't a legit win for Pryor. Without some real shady stuff going on to help him comeback in the later rounds with a new lease of life.

 

I hear you but Pryor would have hammered Hinton at an earlier time for mine. He couldn't have carried his jock IMO. I led the overrated theme decades ago but in recent years he's becoming underrated, and never in my life did i think I'd see the day.

Kameda was a southpaw and Pryor smothered him.

I'd take Whitaker by decision in a tough fight. They are almost opposites, and ironically, are both stylistically awkward for each other. I think this leads to quite a competitive fight.
