Shakur Stevenson thinks Ray Robinson was a bum!

It hasn't even worked, though. Shakur always fights in half-empty arenas, and people often walk out before the fight is over. The only reason this has sold out is that it's against Teo in NY, and it's been billed as an NY vs New Jersey thing. If calling Ray Robinson a bum got him more fans, I'd actually understand the logic, but it turns hardcore fans away, and then his style turns everyone else away. I just don't see how it benefits him.

 

Shakur doesn’t care either way. Just continues to fight once a year.

I actually like the running style. It’s an extremely athletic thing to do.

it’s frustrating but it’s all about self preservation. If I were a boxer, I’d get on a bicycle as well.

 

If SRR was a bum, Shakur would get destroyed by a bum, and even his back foot b!tch style wouldn't save him.

Andre knows what he's doing bringing this one up again, though. Shakur really needs to look into Robinson more, and he could change his mind one day. It's hilarious that his argument for Robinson losing to Floyd is that Floyd had "different looks" - Robinson was arguably the most versatile P4P fighter in the history of the sport; couldn't really put him outside the top 5, anyway. He outboxed Gavilan masterfully in the second fight, but went toe-to-toe with Zivic in the rematch and stopped him; basically beat both of them at their own game, and they were two very different HOF fighters.

For the record, Sugar Ray Robinson beats Shakur and Mayweather on the same night, I think, without barely breaking a sweat. If we're talking about levels. I'm trying not to get pulled into this "Shakur calls Robinson a bum" conversation again because it'll end up ruining my week again.

 

Robinson was so relentless. He really reminds me of Tommy Hearns when they stand and throw combos.

This disrespectful mentality of modern athletes towards the past started with basketball players but now it's increasingly seeping into other sports as well. You're even seeing it in sports like baseball and boxing which have historically had a great deal of reverence and respect towards their own history. I don't remember many athletes talking like this back in the 1990s, 2000s or even the 2010s.

 

Being an exceptional boxer and being intelligent are two different qualities, one person may possess both, while another may not.
