Wrestling and MMA are at a peak in popularity, participation, and funding, and they have nowhere to go but up. MMA is also a young sport, so it's still in its early stages of development. And still, most MMA fans would pick Johnson over Joshua Van or Fedor over Gane any day of the week.

 

People probably thought Devin Haney was too “evolved” for old timers, and he got ping ponged around the ring by the “obviously flawed” Ryan Garcia.

I just don’t think the “evolution” thing works too well for boxing beyond a certain point.. These guys also fought longer rounds, and more often.

Its a fight, at the end of the day.

I recently watched bits of the Zale vs Graziano series and I just don't see them being effective now

I'm not really interested in tearing down legends of the sport. I don't feel it is necessary to put down the new generation to big up the old generation either

I love classic boxing and I think the very best of back then would be great fighters now and the very best now would be great in other eras

I don't know if the best guys now could live in the previous eras. 15 rounds, outdoor fights, fighting monthly or quarterly, not being able to negotiate a bunch of advantages, less weights, less titles. A lot of the sport has become severely watered down.

I will say with better medical, strength & conditioning, nutrition, PED's and less of the rigors from previous generations of the sport that these guys have made some real advancements

 

Haney is not that evolved he relies on being much bigger than his opponents his skill set is overrated and he has no power.
Yeah Garcia is flawed and still ping ponged him around and the much smaller and older Loma also had him doing the Macarena all over the ring and got hosed on the cards. I think it is more at the heavier weights that the new fighters are more evolved especially at heavyweight where you have giants like Fury and Wlad.

 

I respect the hell out of the dude but he was the first name that came to mind. Imagine a prime Mike Tyson v Rocky? Lennox in his prime even big Vit Klit.

 

I remember when I first saw extended footage of Tunney. He seemed criminally underrated in the pantheon of heavyweight greats.

 

I don't like the fact that he knowingly and deliberately avoided black boxers but he was very fluid, good footwork and had some pop.

But Mr Greb busted him up badly once and definitely won another fight.

 

We need some Greb AI, somethings better than nothing! As you alluded to in your post, Tunney was the first old timer I saw that appeared to box in a more modern fashion.

 

Most guys from the 50s/60s on down besides like Ali and Louis. Robinson, Gavilan, Ike Williams at 135 deserves a shout. I don’t see much else. Tunney is too small and would get battered. Dempsey is a chicken **** so he wouldn’t fight the blacks of today and would get dominated by Ali, Louis, Foreman, etc etc etc.

Honestly I haven't watched any fighters from the golden eras.

I'm just disappointed that the Earth is populated more than it was back then and that the American boxing pool is beyond pathetic.

 

This is my pick too. The old time heavies suffer the most because their weight disparity will be the greatest. Johnson used to essentially hit n hold which works well when you are the big guy doing it to the little guy. Now let's see him do that with Wladimir Klitschko.
