Modern British World Champions who would have never wan a world title in yesteryear

What is the criteria here?

Is it the era immediately preceeding each fighters own? So say for instance I said 'Calzaghe' are we talking about the Eubank, Toney, RJJ sort of era?

 

Nah Lewis was exceptional and a few others would have done well. Kinda like Randy Turpins short title reign.

 

what I meant was remove a Champion from this era - any World Champion - even a WBU champion - and put him in ANY era before the modern day alphabet bogus titles existed

so you are talking about anything before 1990 maybe

the 70's
the 60's

How many guys who have won WBU titles are/have ever been world class boxers?

 

What about the IBO? The list of IBO/WBU champs over the last 10 years is pretty big.

Really when you look at. It's not just nearly all of the British "world" champions but also most of the world champs from everywhere else that wouldn't have been champs either. The further you go back the harder it gets. For example the 60's Bantamweights. Only 5 champs that decade : Becerra,Jofre,Harada,Rose and Olivares. although for 60 and 61 there were claimants Halimi and caldwell(EBU) How many Champs per weight have we got now?

 

There must be knocking on 10 in some weights. With the champ in retirement, champ emeritus, interim champ, WBC, WBA, WBO, WBF, WBU, IBO, IBF

 

All respect to Benn and Eubank and Watson but they were about when other claimants were Michael Nunn, James Toney and RJJ. Without all the titles. those fights between them were good old fashioned British title fights between quality fighters like Finnegan and Minter had been before them .

I think Lewis, Calzaghe and Naz could have won a world title in most eras. Dont know about any others although winning one is not really the thing its more being able to defend a few times against the best out there.

Hatton beat Tszyu who was the recognised linnear champ and had held all 3 major belts without losing any in the ring before he fought Hatton. I just dont know if Hatton could have retained at all. No shame in that though - there has been plent of great champions who won a title in the early days but didnt keep it long. Randy Turpin immediately springs to mind.
