Emanuel Steward mentioned before Wlad's rematch with Lamon Brewster that Wlad needed to beat Brewster to gain acceptance. I strongly disagree, in the first fight Wlad dominated Brewster, knocking him around like a tennis ball, and knocking him down before running out of gas and getting ko'd. I think everyone expected a Wlad victory in the rematch, and thats what happened as Klitschko easily outboxed Brewster to a tko victory. Ross Purrity, a tough journeyman also has a win over Wlad, however Klitschko was ahead in their fight before running out of gas and being saved by his corner. I doubt that anyone would pick a now 40 year old Purrity to beat Wlad who is an improved and much more skilled fighter under Steward to beat Klitschko. Which leads me to Corrie Sanders. Sanders destroyed Klitschko in less than 2 rounds 5 years ago, putting Wlad on the canvas 4 times. Wlad showed heart getting up every time but was never in the fight. After his last win over Tony Thompson, guest commentator Lennox Lewis said that Klitschko just needs to keep winning in order to gain universal acceptance as heavyweigt champion. However, there is always the memory of the Corrie Sanders fight. I think and I think many fans agree that a rematch victory over Sanders would get him the recognition that he wants. However Sanders is in his early 40's also, and was ko'd by a body shot in his last fight against an opponent named Osborne Machimana. A first round ko I might add. Sanders is probably permanantly retired, and also isnt ranked, and maybe Klitschko wouldnt want a rematch against a tall southpaw with tremendous power such as Sanders. In a sense, Wlad's situation is unfair as he defeated many world ranked fighters, and I think history will look back on his career kindly. However having followed older brother Vitali, who was never knocked down as a proffesional, and Lennox Lewis who defeated every fighter who beat him in rematches has proved a tough act to follow.
All Wlad needs to do is beat Peter (again) while Peter holds the WBC belt and is ranked #2 at Ring Magazine. Unfortunately, Peter may lose to Vitali on Oct 11.
I wonder how many people would have picked Ali to beat Foreman in 1987 :think The great fighters beat guys when it matters, simple as that.
Wlad will never be accepted as a great Heavyweight, why you ask, look at the Heavyweight division, it's weaker than a Zelenoff right hook. I also feel the fact that Wlad has been knocked out by 3 journeymen in his career doesnt bode too well for him either. I think we should also take a look at how he fights, safety first, and seems to fall apart more times than not, at the first signs of danger, or when the fight gets a little tough. Wlad is just the one-eyed king in the land of the blind imo.
Wlad needs to start beating ass if he wants to be accepted. I think he's awesome as far as a pure boxing goes, but I liked his style before he hooked up with Steward. He tired out easier, but was a lot more aggressive and exciting to watch.
At 32, he has lots of time to improve his resume. He hasn't earned ATG status, nor made anyone's top ten, but he still could. Depends on what happens with the rest of his career. Some of his problem stems from the lack of top-notch opposition in today's HW division.
I agree to an extent, though his two best wins are over Chris Bryd and Sam Peter, one of which should of never been a Heavyweight to begin with, the other just turned 25 at the time and made him look horrible even in victory. I'm sorry, but Wlad would not even be competitive with likes of more recent champs such as Lewis or Tyson, one would scare him into submission, probably in the first round, the other would give old Wlad a boxing lesson for 6 rounds, and then drop the homerun straight right, or when Wlad would go to clinch, step to the side and light him up with his legendary uppercut, once Wlad's hurt, he's nothing.
Wladimir is on his way to being a dominant HW champ, in due time public acceptance should be inevitable.
Horrible thread...using this logic would allow many great fighters' entire career to be discredited. This is a disgrace to boxing.
I dont care whos on his resume hell never get respect in USA after his performance against Corrie Sanders LOL one of those knockdowns he wasnt even hit he just fell on his own :bart David Haye will be his downfall!
In reality, people only remember your last fight. We have video, tv, to remember every fight, but in the public's mind, they only remember your last fighting performance. This can be a good thing, and it can also be an unfair thing. When someone loses like Wlad did, its a good thing people only remember the lastest fights. If Wlad never loses again, racking up 10 to 15 consecutive defenses of his title(which he might do, especially with the trainer of champions with him) people will hail him as a top 10 all time great, even though the Sanders fight happened. That's a good thing for Wlad. But, its an unfair thing for RJJ. Everyone who knows boxing, knows this guy is one of the greatest ever, yet some people only remember his recent KO loses. That is bad and unfair to RJJ and his fans.
look he is the best out there now, he will never be in the holmes, forman, holyfield, lewis class because they never lost to ross the boss type of fighter ever in there career and in there primes there first 10 to 15 years of there career they never lost fighters that wlad had lost to.
