PPV comparison (UFC/HBO/WWE) - YTD 2008

    I'm a boxing fan as well as a MMA fan, but these numbers don't lie:

    YTD Total number of buys:
    UFC: 2,945,000
    WWE: 2,933.000
    HBO: 1,3500.00

    (This part is the most revealing trend)
    Avg buys per event
    UFC: 420,714
    WWE: 405,571
    HBO: 337,500

    Events left this year
    UFC: 5/12
    WWE: 7/14
    HBO 4/9

    Now before anyone goes on a rant how it doesn't include SHO PPV, keep in mind that the UFC numbers are only for UFC PPV. HBO has a shot with the ODLH/Manny fight to catch up a bit, but now that UFC announced Couture vs. Lesnar in Nov, UFC will have a huge event as well.

    UFC has the best fighting the best, WWE isn't for me but it's like drama. Boxing has like you say ODLH vs Pac. Most boxing fans are pissed off

    For christ sake, Amir Kahn on ppv, its a joke

    As bad as the ODH-Pac matchup is perceived, it is still fun **** **** up as far as numbers are concerned. If PBF hadn't retired his match with Oscar would've been even more of a blowout. There's just so much more casual fans in ufc and tons of hardcore WWE fans, which includes a much younger audience also. The matchups in boxing have actually been quite solid, and most of them have been outside of PPV.

    That's the thing... now, moving forward. UFC and MMA in general has plenty of current and rising stars that will keep the wheels turning.

    St.Pierre, Anderson Silva, Lesnar, BJ Penn, Bisping, Forrest, Wanderlei, Rampage, Jon Fitch, Machita and so on. The list is long and growing.

    Boxing has just a few current stars and rising stars.

    Manny, Haye?, Kahn, Cotto, Margarito, Pavlik, Taylor, Klitschko and just a few more "big names".

    But.. you have Calzaghe, Hopkins, Mosely, Wright, Tarver, Jones, Lacy, Hatton, Barrera, Toney and ODLH all with limited future fights and they will all likely be retired before the end of 2009. There are some great fighters under 130, but unfortunately no marquee names that would draw PPV numbers.

    I'd love to see boxing rise back to it's past glory, but there are no real signs of this happening in the next few years. Boxing and PPV have some serious challenges.

    Hasn't UFC had more PPV than boxing this year? Because I don't think April, May, or August had a PPV this year

    That's why the "Average buys per PPV" is the relevant number.

    i do notice that you have only included ppv figures not general figures and only HBO ppv. The reason i say this is because fights that arent on ppv like some of pavliks and hopkins-calzaghe still got big views.

    plus the UK and Germany have big ppv numbers in addition, showtime has ppv and im sure other countries around the world do. this i believe isnt taken into account.

    sorry to say but lesnar fighting for the title already says that the ufc is a joke. Fighting for a title with a 2-1 record?!? Wow

    Why are you comparing two fighting ppv groups against a soap opera ppv group? Why not include DVD Sales for a similar-in-size sitcom?

    Sure.. but keep in mind that EliteXC is shown on CBS and the Kimbo slice fight was huge. Also, Spike does UFC events and the "free" Anderson Silva fight in July was a huge ratings boost.

    SHO wasn't in the comparison for the same reason the only MMA group was UFC. UFC and HBO are the biggest players in PPV

    I've never watched an event from WWE, but WWE is relevant because they are competing for some of the same $$$.

    As the economy slides, PPV dollars will be less discretionary and viewers will make a choice.

    :good this is boxings fault anyway. Cant nobody in the US name a fighter these days besides Floyd, Tyson, Holyfoeld, Lewis, Hoya, Hatton, Pac, tito, and Jones. **** even women know UFC fighters :deal Boxing needs to step up bigtime, but it will eventually

    All major UFC are on ppv. And a lot of Showtime Championship boxing and HBO WCB are not. The UFCs that arent on ppv are comparable to ESPN2s friday night fights. If you compared all of them I think boxing would have a much higher amount of viewers total and per event.

    What was the most recent "big" non-PPV boxing match?

    FWIW" Anderson Silva pulled in 3.8 Million viewers to SpikeTV in July.
