I'm sorry to say, but Khan was an overhyped prospect. I think he'll be back, with a hopefully improved defense, now that his brittle chin has been exposed. I don't believe he's ruined, bad knock out yes, but not ruined. Vargas was a ruined fighter after Trinidad, he took a serious beating. Khan was out in 53 seconds. See the difference?
u have to be actually decent for the word "ruined" to be applied... the 2 most recent and obvious examples being jeff lacy and fernando vargas, who were both world champs with at least names we've heard of on their resumes in the case of lacy and actual big time big name scalps in the case of vargas (a prime winky, a reasonably prime quartey), and who were both ruined by hall of fame calibre fighters (calzaghe and tito) khan doesnt even deserve for that word to be applied to him "exposed" is a better word he was completely destroyed in 54 seconds by a fighter most people had never heard of
He may not be ruined in that he more than likely could still technically be the same fighter, but he's ruined as far as becoming a legit champ or superstar. The fact of the matter is that most elite fighters can bang, and it's quite obvious Khan doesn't belong any where near a ring with a fighter who can.
I cosign this. Khan was declaring himself the second coming of Ray Robinson, he said in three fights he would be untouchable, Warren poured a gazillion dollars into promoting him. He had a backstory that started when he was 8 and wanted to box. There were polls asking whether he would be competitive with Pacquiao, that he would get a world title within a year And it all got ruined in 54 seconds in which he landed not a single punch and it took only 4 shots to leave sprawled on the canvas like a deer that that just been pierced through the heart. DEMOLITION
I agree to an extent. Khan is a good fighter, with a much improved defense, he may make a good run at a title. He's still a young man, developing technique. Example: Miguel Cotto, suspect chin has been hurt may times, insanely good defensive and boxing skills. Add to that a highly skilled offensive repertoire. He is a complete fighter. If Khan can gain a much more superior defensive game, add to that a good counter punch. He does have the potential to be a complete fighter. The mental aspect is a whole different ball game. Its gonna take a few fights to regain his confidence, in the gym is where he needs to work on skill. His camp chose the wrong person to fight. The guys KO record told the story. I think his management has to be a little smarter, and slowly build him up. He had no reason being in the ring with a guy that has won 90% of his fights by KO. Should have been a gradual process. Kick up the level opposition a bit at a time. He was clearly not in this fighters level.
I get what you're saying, but I don't think Khan and Cotto are in the same boat. Cotto may have a bit of a shaky chin, but most of his close calls were against legitimate punchers. Torres can punch, so can Judah, Mosley, and Margo, and he won 2 of those fights without being put on his back. Khan got floored by two light punching guys and was starched in 54 seconds against the first real banger they matched him up with.
No doubt brother, Khan is no Cotto in the least. I have seen, though, Demarcus Correly in his fight with Cotto in PR, hurt Miguel several times. Correly is not known as a power puncher, yet he had Miguel in some serious trouble, almost to the point the that ref. was gonna have to step in. I believe that Miguel does have a brittle chin, but a simular fight to khan's was that of the one you mentioned Ricardo Torres. Unhearlded, young power slugger. Huge step up from pervious opponents. If I recall correctly cotto was in trouble right away from the start, torres even scored a knockdown. (uh, somewhat of a bull **** knock down, but none the less still) he handled it with much more composure and went out to knock Torres. If Khan can work on the mental portion of the job couple that with his skills. He'll win, and keep winning. Hes in good hands, he's gonna stay with Rubio. Thats gonna help him alot.
Khan was a KO waiting to happen. I have no sympathy for cocky people. Those with no humility fall from grace much harder than those who have it. It is pretty much a given that you will be humbled in some way or another in life and nowhere is this more evident than in the sport of boxing.
His management have been building him up for quite some time now though. At some point he has to step up. With a few changes to his defence and strategy I reckon he could regain his confidence and learn from this. I wouldn't write him off yet.
mmmmm.. you see its a very strange thing, a loss like that sometimes brings out the best in a lot of fighters.. It makes then strive harder to regain that position they once held.. In Lewis the McCall loss was the best thing that ever happened in his whole career, it opened up his eyes as to how vulnerable he was compaired to the potential of what it could have been.. Following the loss Manny Steward (the man who instigated his defeat) as McCalls trainer for that single fight.. re constructed Lewis and developed him into the best heavyweight in recent boxing history.. The problem is, Is Amir Khan fortunate enough to have someone as shrewd as Emmanuel to see his flaws precisely enough to correct him and turn his career back around, and is Amir himself as strong a character as Lewis to be able to switch his pro game to an alternative level at such a young age, Its something time may only be able to tell.. I don't think Rubios is the man to do it, he may help a lot with excellent input, but he needs someone who saw the mistakes before they happened.. Khans ability is amazing but his flaw is one that you sometimes cant correct, and thats his punch resilience... He may only be able to go so far.. Lewis learned to gain more solid weight, and stay mobile, utilise his best assets and punch from behind them as a more aurthoritarian style.. Stiff jab, no apprehensive moves, just a more decisive fighter who became a 250 pound ruler.. rather than a quite indecisive 220 pound straight up chancer... Wihout the McCall loss , those things may have never been adressed and he may have retired an underachiever.. I hope Khan learns and does try to change the few things he can to get to where he wants to be.
