...ezzard weighed 179 for that fight. he fought five times that year..scoring three knockouts. the two that went the distance were jersey joe walcott and joey maxim.. the walcott fight was the one in which ezzard won the vacant title. that was on june 22. he defended that title on august 10 and october 14..

Ezzard Charles of Cincinnati took a furious match from Johnny Haynes of New York Monday night scoring a knockout at 2:38 of the eighth round of their scheduled 10-rounder at the arena. Charles weighed 179, Biynes 214. Th« Cincinnati hopeful overcame a 35-pound weight handicap to whip the six foot four-inch Haynes before 4371 who paid $11,247.60. But Charles was not an impressive fighter and the windup was greeted by a mass chorus of boos as Haynes sat on the canvas and took the full count. Haynes had shattered Charles in a bitter exchange when Charles suddenly unleashed a right uppercut that sent Haynes sprawling. Charles beat Haynes largely on his speed and agility- He had a healthy respect for Haynes' right and danced about in a sparring match for two rounds before he caught Haynes on the left cheek with a hard left cross in the third. That took a lot of fight out of the big man and he refused to fight back as Charles carried the fight all the way, using the left hook as his point-scoring weapon.

'Sept. 22 Bill (Chicken) Thompson. 21 year-old Philadelphia heavyweight, died last night of head injuries sustained last Thursay in a 'comback" fight against Johnny Haynes of New York. Thompson, the fifth fighter to die of ring injuries this year in the United States, was knocked out by Haynes with only three seconds remaining of their scheduled 8-roundl bout. He was assisted to his corner after the count of ten, but collapsed and never again fully regained consciousness. Thompson, who weighed in at 180, sustained a severe beating at the hands of Haynes, 30 pounds heavier. Thompson started fighting professionally in 1944, racking up a record of 24 victories, four defeats and two draws. Eighteen of his wins were by knockouts. He appeared a good heavyweight prospect a year ago, but was downed in several bouts with tougher opposition. There were nine ring deaths last year and 11 in 1946.
awesome find! you must exuse me, i have been away in another state doing a big event.....but im back now only for a little while. I have barely had time to work on my lee q murray project with MF. on the fight report, seems charles in the early rounds played the role of a boxer, using his footwork to stay on the outside and stick and move letting haynes punch himself out. in the mid rounds charles punches of attrition seemed to take over, and by round 9 haynes was toast!
