Amir Khan, Glass Jaws, China Chins, and ATGs

We knew Khan had a china chin after he was floored and badly hurt by Willie Limond- 1 KO and 7 TKOs in 29 wins. Now, glass jaw status has been confirmed by a 54-second wipeout in which his complete inability to absorb a punch was truly astounding.

I have three questions for this thread:

    - Can Amir Khan still become a world champion or even a top 10 p4p/HOF fighter with this affliction?

    - Has there ever been an ATG with a glass jaw/china chin?

    - Can anyone become an ATG with a glass jaw/china chin?

You always seem to have good knowledge of boxing history McGrain. Can you think of any great fighters that have had a noticeably weak chin? Roy Jones Jr is an answer that will be given by many, but I don't accept that one as he never had that weakness til he was old and had decimated his body by piling on weight to fight at heavyweight then shedding it again to go back to LHW, that weakness was not in evidence throughout his career. Who is the best fighter you can think of who had a glass jaw?

Hearns would go if you cracked him, but I wouldn't say his jaw was glass, or anything like it. I'm undecided about Jones, but in my opinion he's the fighter who would rate the highest with the weakest chin. But great fighters have to have good punch resistance, especiallly if you are talking historical. If you look at a past great like Archie Moore (who was droppable) he fought literally dozens of all time great fighters. There is no way to thrive in an talent pool like that unless you have excellent punch resistance.

Floyd Patterson is probably the closest I can think of. Nothing like as bad as Khan's though, obviously

Also he was certainly aware of his own weaknesses, and had the brain to work around them with good defence. Unlike Khan.

Absolutley nothing wrong with Patterson's chin. He was a light-heavyweight who only went when he got absolutley clattered by murderous punching bigger men.

He did have a glass jaw, probably the worst of any heavyweight champ - except for Herbie Hide of course. Bruce Seldon and Wlad also deserve a mention.

That's what i'm tying to tell you, he wasn't a heavy, he was a light-heavy. As an amatuer he boxed as a middle. He was bulked up and sent out. As a heavy, his chin wasn't granite that's for sure, but he was only knocked out THREE TIMES.

Once by Johansson, an absolutley murderous puncher. This guy holds a first round knockout over Eddie Machen, and is the only man to stop him before Eddie was washed up.

Twice by Liston, one of the hardest hitters in boxing, ever.

He is a swarmer with a high punch output. You want to tell me his chin is glass? Gimme a break.

The answer is No. Khan has what is worse than a Glass Jaw. I do not even know what to call it because it is so bad.

Amir has good offense skills to be fair and now knows that his chin can't hold up a good punch, he needs to become more of a boxer and less of a power puncher. He is a young guy, so I think that if he can improve his defense he can become a world champion later on.

I don't see him as a HOF in a distant future, as a P4P it is hard to tell cause he has problems with punchers and if he faces a P4P boxer he would have to change his style cause he can't take it to the chin. And we don't know what adjustments he will make after his KO loss.

You can't become an ATG with a glass jaw, it can happen (I don't think so) cause you either need to have great power in both hands or be an extremely defensive fighter like Calderon.

The problem is that if you are a power puncher they won't categorize you as a guy with good boxing skills and if you are an extremely defensive fighter people will categorize you as a boring fighter that doesn't pack power. So to be an ATG is hard as hell, specially if you think and compare what boxers are already established on everyone's ATG list.

1 Thing, Personally I would not say getting take out by a big hitter proves a glass chin. I think the Limond fight is a better indicator of this,

There are some ATGs with less than great chins, Floyd Patterson was dropped more times than any heavyweight champ in history. And in this era, we have 2 undisputed champs with weak chins (Wlad, Haye) so I wouldn't say it is out of the question that he does well.

Although, I think he will be more of a European level Lightweight, and won't be a Top 10 World Star with the division being so packed.
