No question it should be 15 rounds. It never should have been changed, and wouldn't have if it wasn't for TV networks. The championship rounds separate the men from the boys. In my 30 years of following the sport, the elimination of the championship rounds is the WORST thing that has happened in the sport, a travesty.
Ring deaths were the biggest consideration in eliminating 15 round fights. From a spectator's perspective, I prefer 15 round fights because I think that it makes for a more interesting contests (in most cases) and I think it diminishes the possibility for highly controversial decisions, which have certainly hurt the sport. I'm not a medical expert, so I don't know the degree of risk involved in adding three rounds. I think that any decision should be at least partially based on medical evidence. However, I think that what the fighters want is equally important. Fans can make their own decisions.
too many guys slapping or running for 12 rds in gutless fashion and getting the nod and reaping the benefit of supossed great boxing skill. Too many flabby heavyweights, its an embarrasment to the sport. 15 rds levels the playing field forces men to do road work . It makes the fights a lot more than just sparring sessions where speed, and workrate are all that count. It would be more of a fight.
Agree 100%...The drama, intesity and anything can happen feel is absolutely breath taking in those championship rounds. You don't see that nearly as much in 12 rounds.
It seems to me that modern boxing fans who started following the sport after they shortened championship fights don't really appreciate how much better it was when title bouts were 15 rounds. And the saddest part of all is that it was not the least bit necessary, except to fit fights into television time slots.
They need to bring the 15 round fights back. 12 rounds is too short, not to mention an even number, which can lead no more draws and split verdicts so many good title fights now just start heating up in the 10 th round on and then before you know it it is over just when things were about to get good. They are much more safety conscious in boxing now , so to change back to 15 rounds would not .risk a fighters safety, because now a days if they feel a fight should be stopped they stop it. At the very least add one more round. If you have a 13 round fight it couldbe a start and reduce the number of draws by having an odd number of rounds. Not to mention the number 13 would fit boxing to a T
They should bring back 15 round fights in championship fights. The fighters would be pushed to thier physical and mental limits and would really have to dig down to earn the title. That would make for more interesting and exciting drama for the fans.
**** all that, its a contact sport & they get paid well to do it. If they come in in the condition to match their salary then nobody is getting hurt so its up to them. If they are professional enough then they will get in shape as they always should anyway. 15 rds would cut out more than half the contraversial decisions which is 1 of the main bad points of boxing & therefore the sport wouldnt be dragged thru the mud as much by ****s that dont like boxing & use any excuse to bring it down. :thumbsup
