It depends on who your asking... If your asking a real boxing fan, it has to be the 12 round schooling. But if your asking a casual fan, its definitely the 1st round KO. All they want to see in a boxing match is a KO, not a decision.
i was thinking about this the other day-in regards to quintana/williams fights-its a tough question 1st rd ko more painful to ur ego n pride-12rd schooling leaves a longer lasting sting...or maybe i dont know wat im talking about haha
I can picture a long distance call between a guy from England and a guy from St. Pete, Florida having this discussion. :err
both are embarrassing! imagine being KO'd in one round..sucks!! schooled for twelve rounds..sucks!! ...but I'd prefer not losing by a KO...so id pick 1st rd KO as more embarrassing. at least we can say that the loser had a great chin and that the winner couldn't take him out.
12 rounds schooling. As many posters have already mentioned, just look at Lewis. Two early KO losses that wound up meaning **** all. ANYONE can get caught, especially at the higher weight classes. A 12 round drubbing though? Who the heck has ever come back from that? Hell, how often do they even get rematches? To take it even further, how often do they even want rematches?
2 fights come to mind on the 12 round schooling - Lewis v Tua and Calzaghe v Lacey....now in those fights well I think Tua decided after a few rounds that he didn't wanna push his luck going for broke against Lewis as he'd felt his power and didn't like it. He just hoped for 12 round that he could land one of those big left hooks. On the Calzaghe v Lacey fight I think Lacey was heartbroken and just wanted that last bell to finish. He knew he was getting whupped and like all fighters in that situation its pride not wanting to get stopped and also the vain hope that they can land a bomb and turn things around. Spose asking Lacey would give us the best answer on that one.
both sucks! but i don't want to think i trained for 8 to 12 weeks but would only last less than 3 mins in the ring. It sucks!!! both embarassing
The only thing that needs to be added is you must consider who does the schooling/KOing. A 1st round KO loss to a Tommy Hearns or a 12 round schooling by master of the art is nowhere near as bad as a 1st round KO / 12 round schooling by a nobody.
IMO a 12-round schooling is, or more accurately should be, the more damaging of the two, as this is proof that the other guy was superior. However in reality, the 1st round KO is more damaging because of the stigma of not lasting 1 round. Logically, almost anyone can be caught by a lucky punch and stopped, but people don't view it that way when it happens. Illogically, when someone is stopped inside a round it is viewed as being symptomatic of a deep flaw in a boxer (ie a weak chin), whereas if he gets beaten up for 12 rounds somehow this is not viewed as symptomatic of a deep flaw (ie "he had an off-night"). IMO, a 12-round schooling is worse. For example, Trinidad's loss to Winky Wright was a loss far worse than Torres's loss to Holt IMO.
:good more fighters have come back from an instant KO than a 12 round schooling/beating. trinidad could never have excuses against winky torres could have excuses when holt KO'd in the first
Let's take the JC Gomez vs Virchis fight and see what's worse. it might be a 1st round KO or a 12 round schooling. but after Virchis is schooled for 35 minutes he can still starch Gomez in a split second. one thing is sure, a 12 round schooling is funnier to watch then a 1 round KO. Especially when the guy that gets schooled, can ruin the other guys day in a blink
