Why did this guy disappear? He was a two time champ and remained a top contender with a big punch and heart. Anybody know why he dropped out for years, came back to lose again, and then seemingly retired?

I saw his fight with Calzhaghe the other day it was a good fight for the 2 rounds that it lasted, I don't get why the Showtime commentators thought it was an early stoppage, even Mitchell was'nt really complaining about it.

respectfully disagree.. He hurt calzaghe first and as soon as he was in trouble they stopped it. Seems a bit nationalistic in the stoppage. I remember Mitchell being a bit confused on why it was stopped

I just watched it, and Mitchell didn't really react like someone who was outraged by the stoppage. His balance at the end was questionable at best. But he definitely could have continued through the round, though I think it's pretty clear he would have lost the fight. He was getting smacked around, other than the knockdown of Calzaghe. Gotta say one thing, anyone who thinks Calzaghe slaps should watch this fight. He threw nothing but bombs the whole fight.
I started the thread because I thought it was clear from this fight that Mitchell was and could have remained a viable contender for a belt. It's a shame he dropped off the map.

    He got old.

He was a decent, but not great champion. Remember he won his title from an old Frankie Liles, then drew and lost to Bruno Girard, a frenchman who couldn't break an egg but possessed nads large enough to walk through Mitchell's power and outwork him.

Mitchell also clearly lost to Ottke and although fought Calzaghe tough for a round, wasn't going to win that fight.

Mitchell was a decent enough fighter, but one of those frustrating guys to watch that just wouldn't let his hands go enough.
