Calzaghe is unorthodox or awkward but having that for granted, he has a lot of technical expertise and know-how... Of course, it has to do with experience and good management - Calzaghe combined the safe and sure way to win fights just like Floyd Mayweather... Calzaghe out on commited offense and non-stop, relentless pressure, Mayweather on unvulnerable defense and slick counterpunching. Both physically up to their tasks, both intelligent enough not to do what may be risky and turn out to be unsuccessful. Calzaghe is also a rare case of flashy styled technician combined with old british full-hearted pressure fighting.
The only guys who I would class as Master Boxers who are active just now are Roy Jones (though he hasn't been one for a few years now, but at his peak he was a Grand Master), Bernard Hopkins and James Toney. Floyd Mayweather was one too IMO. Joe Calzaghe is very very good at what he does. He has superb handspeed, he's very strong, relentless, fantastic stamina/energy/workrate/conditioning, strong mentally, strong chin, very very difficult to beat. IMO, he does not have the boxing skills to be called a Master Boxer. Had he ever faced a peak Master Boxer, he would most likely have lost. However, he is a master at what he does, a very very good fighter.
There is no point in discussing Calzaghe or his skillset on this forum, no matter what he does from here til now, he will polarise opinion because he has a style that is unconventional and he's non American. People saying he's not a master boxer? How do you think he gets away with what he does? His footwork, his head movement, his jab are all pristine and at the peak of his abilities. All I can say is, a legitimate P4P #2 who has spent a decade beating championship contenders has proven himself a master boxer and someone that can be happily compared with ATG's - even if he isn't one himself.
no and none of them on your list are master boxers floyd mayweather jr is the closest thing to a master boxer if he was a master boxer he would have masterd hopkins style
Joe's preferred MO is as a counter puncher. He has always thrived on boxers that come to him and has always looked less at ease when having to force the pace. You misunderstood what I meant by Joe fought Bernard'a fight though. I ddint mean Joe fought as a defensive master with all the tricks and some sweet lead rights, I meant that he fought the fight that Hopkins wanted... a scrapy, dirty affair with limited exchanges and a lot of clinching and still won.
Marquez Finito Lopez Archie Moore Roberto Duran Willie Pep Benny leanord James Toney they are good but they aint master boxers
Calzaghe meets all of the above, but I don't remember seeing him roll with punches that much, at least not in his recent fights.
yes obviously how do you suppose a lightweight jumped to welter fought leanord fought Hagler goes and beats Barkley and fights until he is 52 without being a Master at the art of boxing.
I wouldn't call him a master boxer. He has good reflexes and handspeed and he's a decent counterpuncher. But he's not very slick, he has defensive flaws and he's not a great tactician by any mean. I see him as a come forward fighter who throws punches in bunches for 12 rounds non stop.
If he took up fishing I'm sure he would be a master baiter........ Sorry, it's Friday of a bad week and I'm seeing how many and how fast I can chug down the brew.....
