Anyone else glad Calzaghe is fighting Roy rather than Pavlik or Dawson?

I used to want Calzaghe to fight the Pavliks and Dawsons of this world, when he signed to fight Hopkins. I used to think the past-it greats could not provide enough of a challenge...Now I realise I was wrong!

Sure, Roy is no longer in his prime, but he still has good speed and reactions, and, most importantly, he has experience, he is a great tactician, he knows how to adjust in a fight and how to show up his opponent's weaknesses and mistakes.

Why would I want to see Calzaghe in a speed, fitness and strength race against Pavlik or Dawson? What would that prove about Calzaghe? We already know how fast, strong, etc. Calzaghe is by looking at his fight against prime, hungry, unbeaten, dangerous Kessler! Dawson or Pavlik could not prove more about Calzaghe than Kessler did, IMO.

...On the other hand, the RJJ fight could once again show us how intelligent and tactically responsive and flexible Calzaghe really is...just like the Hopkins fights showed, and not in Calzaghe's favour either!

...Now, let's look at Dawson...man, he makes so many mistakes, he is tactically so naive, he loses the plot so often...how would a fight against him prove how intelligent/great a fighter Calzaghe was?

...Pavlik also pretty much only fights one way...he is very inexperienced too...he's never had to adjust a lot mid-figth against anyone, really.

For me, Hopkins showed Calzaghe was not as good as I thought he was, in a way no one else ever did, except Bika, who did so by mistake, not by design (I think). On the other hand, RJJ has all it takes to show us again how good Calzaghe really is in a way newbies like Pavlik or Dawson never could.

Calzaghe has a lot to prove, I think, after his performance against Hopkins. Another one of those giffs with him paddling the air with his gloves and his reputation will seriously suffer. Only a good performance against an experienced, intelligent, flexible tactician like RJJ could make me think better of Calzaghe than I currently do. Whether he wins or loses matters less to me than his level of performace given RJJ's level of performance.

So...I'm very happy with this fight. Looking very much forward to it...

...and...I am dissapointed so many of my fellow Brits want Calzaghe to get the win against Pavlik (or Dawson) just to shut the American fanboys up! Should we not care more about Calzaghe's level of performance, his intelligence, adjustability etc. at this stage of his career than about him beating the flavour of the day and still unproven American(s)?

The fight against Jones dose little for his legacy if he wins and far more for his bank balance which I suspect is the primary motivating factor here. And who can blame him? He's beaten the two young challengers everyone wanted him to face in Lacy and Kessler in convincing fashion and got **** all credit for it.
Personally I'd have preferred it if he fought Pavlik as there styles would mesh beautifully and I think Joe has declined just enough to make it very competitive, hopefully next spring they may meet.
Dawson I'd pick to beat Joe at the moment, I know he's flawed but he'd be to fast, strong and flashy. Luckily for Joe he's not a big enough name at present to get the fight made.

    Simple as why?

Because many Americans think Pavlik would beat him?

    Because Pavlik is very popular?

Because Pavlik is unbeaten and beat Taylor who beat Hopkins?

Because once he beat Pavlik he would get credit from American fans?:huh

...because none of these are good reasons in my book.

Personally i cant wait for the Jones fight , its been in the making for years , i also think its a very risky fight , im not so sure jones is as shot as most think. Sure i'd like to see JC fight Pav but times running out for Joe , 36/37 years old i expect this to be his last fight , except if he loses....

    I don't see why it's an either/or scenario.

Calzaghe can fight Jones and then Pavlik, if Pavlik can get past Hopkins. Calzaghe/Pavlik would be a bigger fight at that point and Joe would get more credit for beating the more-proven Pavlik.

I have no interest whatsoever in him fighting Chad Dawson, Dawson's done nothing to establish himself on that level thus far in his career.

...either/or assuming it's Calzaghe's last fight because he can no longer motivate himself to shine. I think he is being honest when he says Pavlik would not motivate him because he's another Lacy at worst or a Kessler at best, and he's done all that already.

Yes. A win over Pavlik would bring a good deal of credit. Not huge by any means, but a good deal more than beating Jones now. Personally, I don't think the RJJ fight is a sure thing for Calzaghe, I feel a lot of people are sleeping on Jones and how muxh Calzaghe has lost with age himself. A fight with Pavlik seems only natural, if not him, then the winner of Dawson/Tarver. Calzaghe is not going to improve anymore. He's as talented as he'll ever be with less physical ability. The man is on the slide, so for him to beat somebody as young, hungry and physically powerful as Pavlik would be quite good. Not as impressive as Kessler but more so than beating Jones.

I'm not as upset as most on here about Calzaghe fighting Jones. Jones would of continued fighting on regardless of whether he got Calzaghe to fight him. Let's face it, people just don't want to see one of the most disrespected and hated fighter's beat up a "shot" legend. But if he does do that, then he hasn't really achieved much in terms of legacy. But think of the joy all the Calzaghe haters and Jones fans will have should Jones pull off the win? They'll be thrilled. So where's the harm really? Jones gets maybe his last shot at glory while Calzaghe receives little to none credit.

All in all, Pavlik is the legacy fight and Jones is the money fight. Calzaghe, imo, will fight both.

I was hoping he fought a young Pavlik instead. Calzaghe only fights old or untested fighters.

Calzaghe would fight anyone 175 and south for a career high payday, anyone, including Pavlik, Dawson, etc. don't you agree? He wants that "0" more than anything, but if he think he can keep the "0" and make the big Buck$, he will never say no...surely!

True. Calzaghe is obsessed about retiring undefeated, its what he wants more than anything. I don't think he'll fight anyone at this stage of his career he thinks is a risk, unless the money was astronomical.

It would be great to see Joe V Pav , and its a natural fight to make if Pav beats Hopkins , it would gain JC american acceptance as the best, however if Joe beat Pav , then retired , it would ultimatley damage the sport as i see Pav as the next star of MW to LHW , it may be a fight best left to the imagination for both men. Lets say Joe lost to Pav , his legacy would be thrown into complete doubt by most , and he does not have time on his side to avenge or rebuild his career. All said though , i'd pay to see the the lot.
