Interviewer: "Is it important for you to hold on the WBC belt, and fight a Luis Collazo?"

Berto: (slightly skakes head) "Ah.. I mean, it doesn't matter, you now what I mean, whoever my promoters want me to fight. Luis Collazo is the mandatory, just like I said, as a young fighter you have to, you know, fight different types of boxers. I fought a good fighter tonight (Steve Forbes), I'll fight another good boxer in my next fight if they want me to, so whatever they want me to do I'm doing."

I'll put it this way because in text this might not translate - Berto sounded less than thrilled he might have to face a fighter like Luis Collazo, or any other, as he put it - "good fighter." You don't even have to read between the lines, Berto is literally telling us a hole helluva alot. Everything about how he responded to that question said to me this guy is exactly what his worst doubters say he is.. And I was just starting to come around.

Anyway, just a sidenote really. Something to keep in mind.

Anyways, the best welterweight runs through Margarito and Williams. If we see Clottey face Williams for the unified title, then the winner of that bout will clearly be #1. For Berto, he is only a paper champ. He only has the belt because PBF retired. If he wants to be the best, he needs to face Margarito, Williams, or a top 5 WW at some point down the road, which means sooner than later.

He still young in his pro career so he probably has'nt learned how to respond to questions in a cohesive fashion,Berto will be a good champion if brought along right just like he is now.

I apologize, "is" should have been "us" there. I don't know if that helps. Berto sounded squeamish and distant about fighting Collazo. There's this perception that Berto is green, hasn't faced any real competition, ect. I found it very telling hearing a response like this from Berto. The thought of moving up in class seemed to pain him.

    That's a possibility. Potentially.

BTW, how do you think he should be brought along at this point?

He should ignore the questions about his standing with other Welters... He needs to find about two more tomato cans, then maybe an experienced big name who has faded, and then step it up in late 2009, early 2010. He's a paper champ right now, but he's still a young-ass dude, and needs to take it slowly and not let the fame get to him.

Well I think Dibella putting him in there with Collazo is a very good step up for Berto because Collazo is still a top ten 147 pounder who has decent skills and is not a big puncher so Berto will get some good rounds in against Collazo and win comfortably by UD. A good fight after that would be against Rafal Jackiewics who recently got a win over Jackson Bonsu,Rafal by indication of KO ratio does'nt seem like a big hitter so that would be another good win on Berto resume and from there all depends how he would look in his these bouts.

Berto made it sound like he wouldn't at all mind being stripped of the WBC championship just to avoid fighting Collazo. That's the crux of this thread. Do you think Berto would be better served to avoid Luis Collazo for now?

I agree, hopefully the Collazo fight happens, and good mapping beyond that ^. As I mentioned in a previous post Berto made it sound like he might allow himself to be stripped, I found that a little surprising.

i think a berto vs collazo fight is perfect for both of them actually, not sure what to make of bertos comments... but if the fight is made im not sold on a berto victory completely, think it will be a close fight.

I don't know if berto talks like the best welterweight in the world. But I know he never will be the best welterweight in the world and that's all that matters.
