He DID have a shitty gameplan. Don't plan to stick and move for 12 rounds if you only have 10 rounds of stamina. His chances would have been better to stay in front of Marg and really sit down on his punches and try to make him miss and pay.

Don't know if that would have won him the fight, but I would give him a better chance that way. Easy to judge in hindsight though, who knew Marg could take that much punishment and still keep coming?

I am by no means a Margarito fan... Everyone who has seen me on here knows I talk more **** about him than anyone....

    BUT

He will beat Cotto's brains out next time! Period.

All of you wiseguys who say he sould have kept Margs in the center of the ring need to do one thing: Try doing that against someone much bigger and stronger than you who blocks punches with his chin, all while throwing haymakers at you. It ain't gonna happen.

Cotto is a really good boxer, but he just doesn't have what it takes to beat Margo. It ain't gonna happen. He has to do a whole bunch of things differently. He has to hope he doesn't get his nose flattened, throw more body punches, have more stamina, Work on his chin, don't get hit with any body shots, keep the fight at a safe distance, AND slow Marg down with some good head shots. He just ain't gonna do this for 12 rounds.

He didn't have a shitty gameplan imo. I think if Cotto would have held while his back was against the ropes that would have benefited him a whole lot, possibly even changing the outcome of the fight.

exactly! as someone whos had over 30 amature fights I've been there before TRYING to box with a guy who just keeps comming forward and throwing huge shots...you basicly have to just sit down and BE better at it than the other guy.

...I felt it all started with the way he defeated Mosley. He fell in love with his mobility and thought he could do the same thing against Margarito for 12 rounds.
Well, guess what, he couldn't and he ended up lingering in the corner or on the ropes too often and for too long ... and he payed for it every time.
Does it make it a bad game plan? No. It was probably the perfect game plan, but he couldn't execute it 100% because he's not experienced in that fighting style.

It was neutralized by Margarito's body work. That simple.

Basically i think that if Cotto wants to win the rematch then he needs to keep practising what he was doing in the last fight in the first half (if he practices it he will improve slightly by the time of the rematch). He was looking good in the first 6 rounds.

He will also have to learn how to tactically hold and how to avoid Margo's uppercuts (this should also help him not get his nose broke again which did effect his stanima greatly).

Work loads on stanima. Increasing stanima can only be beneficial when fighting a boxer like Margo.

Like i said earlier, Cotto's game plan in the first 6 rounds was good. He needed to fight on the back foot as going toe-to-toe with Tony is sucicidal but in the rematch he should stand his ground every now and then so as he can plant his feet and land some body shots. Hooks to the body is the best weapon in Cotto's arsenal and he completely ignored it in the first fight (obviously this was down to Tony keeping his elbows tucked in when not throwing leather but Cotto needs to find a way around it). Margo has an iron jaw and unbelievable stanima but no one has iron ribs or an iron liver so target these and this should slow Margo down so as Cotto is not under constant pressure).

The mental aspect will also come into play. Maybe Cotto should hire a sports psycologist or something but i don't know how anyone could help you forget the beating Cotto took.

    Great fighters hurdle obstacles.
Juan Manuel Marquez had his nose broken by Manny Pacquiao in their first fight, and went on to propinate a schooling session on Manny for the remainder of the fight.
Thats what great fighters do, they compensate and change the plan to whatever can and will work.

Cotto's nose however was'nt the problem. It was a tornado coming at him nonstop that finally devoured him.
Let us note that Cotto was losing steam down the stretch vs SSM, did he have a busted or broken nose then also?

Please guys, dont do Cotto an injustice. He actually fought a great fight but was beaten by the better fighter on that night.
I'm sure he'll have a chance to tweak a few things and hope for it to make a difference.....but so will Margarito.

This is not a case of a fighter being totally better than the other guy. Like I just thought Forrest was better than Shane period. Cotto did good in his fight with AM. He has a few things to clean up. I picked AM to ko Cotto as he did, but Cotto has correctable mistakes. He doesn't have to move a lot as he did, and he has to use defense. What I'm saying is that I don't think Cotto can beat AM, but it is not out of the realm for Cotto to beat AM. I don't think he will because AM has two fists, and Cotto has one. I won't be shocked if Cotto decisions AM in a rematch by out hustling him. I just don't think it will happen.

Mike Tyson once said, "Every one has a game plan until you are punched in the mouth". Cotto expected to move, but he didn't expect to move as much. AM had something to do with that. You can go in with the best game plan in the universe lol, but the other fighter doesn't always comply...
