Jake was always struggling to make weight because there was no super middle back then, so in a way this is complete conjecture. But the idea is that Jake later in his career would have aged into a natural super middle. Joe's Speed against Jake's aggresion and mean body punching. Would the speed get Joe a points win, or would the body punching slow him down? Interesting fight because both guys could punch somewhat, but laregly choose/chose not to due to hand problems. Would they pull out all of the stops? Could either dent the other guy's chin? Any thoughts?
I think the bull would be tailor-made for calzaghe, a slow come foward fighter with very slow or little lateral movement. Although the bronx bull did have great power and for once may not have as much trouble making 168,although in his autobiography he even found 175 a huge struggle in his later career. I see this fight being a stoppage from calzaghe in the later rounds, this is ofcourse if the fight is conducted under the current rules, were fighters arent allowed to take too much sustained punishment and pressure, which calzaghe would put on jake! but if this fight is made with oldschool referees it would go the distance, with calzaghes hand raised at the end of 12
Deffo. Thinking about this the other day, when I read that Kid Gavilan wasn't a very hard-hitter. Watching old clips of him, it's clear that if he battered opponents nowadays like he did back then he'd be the holder of far more stoppages. I guess that applies to a few of the old school fighters though really.
could very well be like lacy-calzaghe. lamotta was known for taking beatings, mind you against great opposition. btw, no, I am not at all comparing Lacy with Lamotta. Just the kinda' stylistic matchup this would be
LaMotta would work him to the body, hit him with cleaner harder, punches and win rounds easy.At 168 he would be better not killing himself to make weight, and a better chin and punch
Lamotta did not hit hard. He was not feather fisted but he lacked the power to hurt Calzaghe, particularly at a higher weight,, just as Calzaghe could in no way hurt him. It would come down to the fact Calzaghe is better in every other area, bar chin and physical strength. Lamotta is exactly the type of fighter that Calzaghe excels against, fighters who come forward, not great defence, not great speed, not the power to hurt him. Calzaghe would win easily.
If Bernard Hopkins put him down so can Jake but I'd go for Calzaghe close UD,that is my pick. And at 168 it would be harder for Calzaghe than for LaMotta
Hopkins hits harder than Lamotta and also put Calzaghe down with a timed counterpunch that Calzaghe did not see. When did Lamotta put anybody down with a sneaky counter?
Fair enough. I think in terms of ATG match ups with Calzaghe involved Lamotta would be one of the easiest for him.
LaMotta was a fighter entirely dependant on his left hand. Calzaghe excells at out jabbing orthodox fighters. Calzaghe can be hit by right hands, but they are basically none existant in LaMotta's arsenal at the top level. I see a 36 Calzaghe winning every round here on a good day, a 29-32 year old Calzaghe would have most likely stop him.
Calzaghe wins a UD though closer than some imagine i would have thought, there is very little if any prime footage of la motta around 1944 time and most people's opinions of him come from the 6th robinson fight where he was miles past prime, weight drained the lot. He would cause calzaghe problems if he was prime a totally diffrent beast than latter la motta from the accounts i've read but i think joe would win
