If he faced a puncher in his next fight and was KOed Khan style, I wouldn't bat an eyelid. It wouldn't surpise me at all. It would surprise me to see some other prospects laid flat, though, by a puncher. It clearly seems that it would surprise you, though. I think many here would at least expect it a bit, as a possibility, and in any case, more so than for any other fighter who is as hyped, not least because of his style and temperament, even if you ignore his chin. I don't think much of his opposition and therefore, I am uncertain how good he is. Impossible until he faces someone who is borderline world-class level (B-) and impossible until he faces a puncher. He hasn't faced either.
Yes, he is! But how does that justify the hype he is getting as THE BEST? Khan was doing pretty well in the hype, excitement and money stakes, and we all agree he was a hype-job. Gamboa could be a hype-job too, just a better, more exciting, more talented hype-job. (remember, his promotional team and many hard-core fans are already hyping him as the next p4p number one! Khan was only hyped as Britain's youngerst to be Champion). If Gamboa becomes no better overall a fighter than Bute or even Kessler, say, he's a hype-job, given the expectations. You see that, don't you? All I'm saying is that the hype he is getting is ridiculous, nothing more! It's great hype if you work for Gamboa or his promoter, but shouldn't we, hard-core fans not go overboard in amplifying it? Should we not wait and see before we thow the p4p labels around? Doesn't mean we cannot love the guy to bits, and keep a cool head, does it?
Boxing isn't and never will be fair with levels of exposure. But the reason Gamboa is talked about more is he looks more impressive. Bradley/Juan Manuel Lopez/Berto are very good young champs but all not as skilled as Gamboa, the kids special. Dimitrenko is pretty basic but a very tall HW, Prescott is a beast but a limited 1, Peterson looks raw, Ward looks impressive but possibly fragile, those guys havent quite been fighting at the level Gamboa has either. Gamboa is polished and could beat the WBC champ is his division tomorrow, could the others?
So because we can ALWAYS expect (and I say: rightfully expect) an exciting fight from Gamboa )unlike from Bute and Kessler, whose exciting fights depend on the oppoent) make us hype machines? :think
Gamboa's faced good punchers already, Khan was kept away from punchers and on wobbly legs twice against relative none punchers (Gomez was a puncher the weight below but it was a nothing blow that put Khan down). Prescot is a monumental puncher anyway though, there arent many 6'0 murderous punching Prescotts that world class prospects will be fed too Hopefully they match him with WBC belt holder Larrios, which will be a good step up
Maybe Valero would KO him, no reason to say it's very unlikely at all! How can you be sure he could beat a B level fighter when he went 12 and had a bit of trouble with a C+ level fighter? I'm not saying the rest are world-beaters, but Gamboa fans do, about their boy, despite the fact he's no more proven than they are! (But they don't say the same about the others) That's the whole point! He's overhyped!:good
Who gives a ****, hype is a good thing. You stupid ****s all rail against hype, but it's good for the sport. We need fighters who get backing, who bring people into watch the fights and be on TV. Just like any other sport, sometimes just because a guy comes from a good pedigree and is skilled doesn't mean he will have a great career. It happens in ALL sports, not just boxing, and boxing is especially brutal. You guys act like you're better off not hyping fighters until they prove themselves, well guess what.. plan on not watching them fight on TV until they make it.
